Align your credentials with specialty occupation standards
H-1B eligibility for Part-time Lecturers requires the role to qualify as a specialty occupation. A master's degree or higher in the subject you'll teach strengthens this case considerably. Foreign degrees may need a credential evaluation from a NACES-recognized agency before Northeastern's HR team can proceed.
Target departments with recurring part-time hiring
Northeastern's Khoury College, D'Amore-McKim School of Business, and College of Engineering consistently post part-time lecturer openings. Identifying which colleges align with your academic background and reaching out to department coordinators directly improves your chances before a role is formally listed.
Understand how part-time status affects H-1B eligibility
USCIS allows H-1B petitions for part-time positions, but the offered salary must still meet DOL prevailing wage requirements for a part-time schedule. Northeastern's international office is experienced with this structure, so confirm the proposed hours and wage rate align before the LCA is filed.
Use Migrate Mate to find open Part-time Lecturer roles
Northeastern posts part-time lecturer positions across multiple portals and they fill quickly. Use Migrate Mate to browse current openings at Northeastern that are open to visa sponsorship, so you're applying to roles before they close rather than chasing already-filled positions.
Ask about concurrent enrollment and J-1 eligibility early
If you're currently on an F-1 or J-1 visa at another institution, you may be able to take on a part-time lecturer role at Northeastern concurrently. Confirm this with both your current DSO and Northeastern's Office of Global Services before accepting any offer.
Get your offer letter reviewed before H-1B filing begins
Northeastern's HR team initiates the H-1B petition after an offer is accepted, but the offer letter's job duties language directly shapes the I-129 petition. Review that the listed duties reflect a specialty occupation and match your degree field before USCIS adjudicates the petition.

Does Northeastern University sponsor H-1B visas for Part-time Lecturers?
Yes, Northeastern University sponsors H-1B visas for Part-time Lecturers when the role qualifies as a specialty occupation and the candidate holds a relevant bachelor's degree or higher. Part-time positions are eligible under H-1B rules, but the offered wage must meet DOL prevailing wage standards for the hours worked. Northeastern's Office of Global Services manages the petition process once an offer is extended.
How do I apply for Part-time Lecturer jobs at Northeastern University?
Applications go through Northeastern's careers portal at northeastern.edu/careers. Part-time Lecturer postings are listed under the faculty or academic affairs categories. You can also browse visa-sponsorship-eligible openings at Northeastern directly through Migrate Mate, which filters for roles where international candidates are actively considered. Tailoring your application to the specific department's teaching needs, rather than submitting a generic CV, significantly improves your response rate.
Which visa types does Northeastern University commonly use for Part-time Lecturer roles?
H-1B is the most common pathway for Part-time Lecturers who need employer-sponsored status. J-1 Scholar visas are also used, particularly for visiting or exchange-based arrangements. F-1 OPT and CPT can support short-term or adjunct teaching for current students. Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying academic fields may also be eligible for TN status, which Northeastern's international office can facilitate.
What qualifications does Northeastern University expect for Part-time Lecturer roles?
Most Part-time Lecturer positions at Northeastern require at minimum a master's degree in the relevant subject area, though a doctorate is often preferred for graduate-level courses. Practical industry experience is weighted heavily in professional schools like D'Amore-McKim and Khoury College. If your degree was earned outside the United States, a credential evaluation from a NACES-recognized evaluator is typically required before your application can be fully assessed.
How do I time a visa sponsorship request when starting a Part-time Lecturer role at Northeastern?
If you're transitioning from F-1 OPT, the H-1B cap-subject filing window opens April 1 each year with a lottery in March. Northeastern must file on your behalf before your OPT expires. For J-1 or TN holders, status changes have different timelines. Engaging Northeastern's Office of Global Services immediately after your offer letter is signed gives the university enough lead time to meet USCIS filing deadlines without gaps in your work authorization.
