Align Your Credentials to SHSU Departments
SHSU hires Part-time Lecturers by academic department, so tailor your CV and cover letter to match the specific discipline you're targeting. Departments evaluate whether your degree field directly supports the courses you'd teach.
Confirm Your Degree Meets Specialty Occupation Standards
For H-1B sponsorship, USCIS requires that your position qualifies as a specialty occupation. Part-time Lecturer roles typically need a directly related master's degree or higher. Gather official transcripts and credential evaluations before you apply.
Understand How Part-Time Status Affects H-1B Filing
USCIS allows H-1B petitions for part-time positions, but your employer must specify the part-time hours and prorate the prevailing wage accordingly. Confirm with SHSU's international office that the offered hours meet DOL wage requirements for the role.
Engage SHSU's International Faculty Office Early
Once you have a verbal offer, contact SHSU's Office of International Programs immediately. University HR timelines for initiating H-1B or J-1 paperwork can run several months, so starting the conversation before your offer letter is finalized prevents avoidable delays.
Use Migrate Mate to Find Open Lecturer Postings
SHSU posts Part-time Lecturer roles across many departments at different times of year. Use Migrate Mate to filter and track open positions at Sam Houston State University that are actively sponsoring international candidates, so you don't miss a hiring window.
Time Your F-1 OPT or CPT Application Around Academic Cycles
If you're on F-1 status, SHSU's semester-based hiring means your OPT authorization dates need to align with the academic term you're being hired for. Submit your OPT application to your Designated School Official at least 90 days before your intended start date.

Find Part-time Lecturer at Sam Houston State University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Sam Houston State University sponsor H-1B visas for Part-time Lecturers?
Yes, Sam Houston State University sponsors H-1B visas for Part-time Lecturer roles where the position qualifies as a specialty occupation under USCIS standards. Because the role is part-time, SHSU must document the specific hours and confirm the offered wage meets DOL prevailing wage requirements for that fraction of full-time employment. You'll work through SHSU's international programs office to initiate the petition.
How do I apply for Part-time Lecturer jobs at Sam Houston State University?
Applications for Part-time Lecturer positions at SHSU go through the university's official employment portal, where departments post openings independently throughout the year. You'll typically submit a CV, cover letter, and academic transcripts. You can also browse current openings filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility on Migrate Mate, which tracks active SHSU postings for international candidates in one place.
Which visa types does Sam Houston State University commonly use for Part-time Lecturer roles?
SHSU supports several visa categories for Part-time Lecturers depending on your situation. H-1B is the most common path for ongoing employment. J-1 Scholar status is frequently used for visiting or exchange-based teaching appointments. F-1 OPT and CPT cover recent graduates in eligible fields. TN visas are available to qualifying Canadian and Mexican nationals in covered academic disciplines.
What qualifications does SHSU expect for Part-time Lecturer positions?
Most Part-time Lecturer roles at SHSU require at minimum a master's degree in the relevant academic discipline, though some departments require a doctorate, particularly in STEM or professional fields. Prior teaching experience at the university level strengthens your application. For visa sponsorship purposes, your degree must directly correspond to the subject matter of the courses you'd be assigned to teach.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Part-time Lecturer role at SHSU?
For H-1B sponsorship, USCIS standard processing takes three to five months from petition filing, and SHSU must complete a DOL Labor Condition Application before filing, adding several weeks to the timeline. J-1 sponsorship through SHSU is typically faster, often four to eight weeks. Starting the process immediately after receiving a verbal offer gives you the best chance of having authorization in place before your teaching term begins.
