Align your credentials with SHSU's academic requirements
Most Teaching roles at SHSU require a terminal degree in the relevant discipline. Confirm your foreign transcripts are evaluated by a NACES-recognized credential service before applying, since academic departments review equivalency documentation during initial screening.
Target departments with active faculty searches
SHSU posts faculty and teaching openings through its HR portal and Higher Ed Jobs. Filter by department and apply during the fall recruitment cycle, when most tenure-track and lecturer searches open, to maximize your chances of reaching a sponsoring department.
Understand how J-1 and H-1B sponsorship differ at universities
Universities like SHSU routinely use J-1 visas for visiting scholars and short-term teaching appointments, while H-1B petitions apply to longer-term, salaried faculty positions. Clarify which category your role falls under before your offer letter is drafted.
Ask about the LCA filing timeline before accepting an offer
Your employer must file a Labor Condition Application with the DOL before USCIS can process your H-1B petition. At universities, this step can take two to four weeks. Build that window into your start date negotiation so your appointment isn't delayed.
Browse open Teaching roles at SHSU using Migrate Mate
Search Migrate Mate to find Teaching positions at Sam Houston State University filtered by visa sponsorship type. This lets you identify which roles are actively seeking candidates who need H-1B or other work authorization support.
Prepare for cap-exempt H-1B filing advantages at SHSU
As a public university, SHSU qualifies as a cap-exempt employer under USCIS rules. That means your H-1B petition can be filed at any time of year without entering the annual lottery, removing one of the biggest barriers international Teaching candidates face.
