Align your credentials to U.S. equivalency standards
Universities evaluate foreign degrees carefully for Instructor hires. If your bachelor's or master's is from outside the U.S., get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved agency before applying so Sam Houston can assess your qualifications without delay.
Target departments with recurring Instructor openings
Sam Houston State hires Instructors across disciplines ranging from nursing to business to computer science. Focusing on high-turnover departments increases your odds of landing a role where sponsorship is already part of the hiring conversation.
Clarify sponsorship intent before the offer stage
Ask directly during your on-campus or virtual interview whether the department has sponsored Instructors before. Academic hiring committees at regional universities often have more flexibility than HR, and early clarity prevents late-stage surprises.
Browse open Instructor roles on Migrate Mate
Sam Houston State University lists Instructor openings regularly across departments. Use Migrate Mate to filter for roles at the university that match your visa type, so you can apply to positions where sponsorship is already expected.
Understand the H-1B cap-exempt advantage for university roles
Positions at public universities like Sam Houston State are H-1B cap-exempt, meaning USCIS can process your petition year-round without waiting for the annual lottery. You can start any time the role is offered, not just in April.
Time your application around the academic hiring calendar
Most Instructor searches at Sam Houston State conclude in spring for fall semester starts. Submitting your application and visa paperwork well before May gives the university enough runway to file your H-1B petition before your intended start date.

Find Instructor at Sam Houston State University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Sam Houston State University sponsor H-1B visas for Instructors?
Yes. Sam Houston State University sponsors H-1B visas for Instructor positions. As a public university, it qualifies as a cap-exempt employer, which means USCIS can process H-1B petitions year-round without the annual lottery. This gives international candidates a significantly clearer path to a start date compared to private-sector employers subject to the cap.
How do I apply for Instructor jobs at Sam Houston State University?
Applications go through Sam Houston State University's official careers portal, where Instructor postings list department-specific requirements and contact details. Roles are also listed on Migrate Mate, where you can filter by visa type to find positions where sponsorship is already expected. Most postings require a cover letter, CV, and teaching philosophy statement at minimum.
Which visa types are commonly used for Instructor roles at Sam Houston State University?
H-1B is the most common work visa for Instructor positions at the university. Sam Houston State also supports J-1 exchange visitor status, F-1 OPT and CPT for recent graduates, TN status for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying fields, and employment-based Green Card sponsorship through EB-2 or EB-3 for longer-term faculty hires.
What qualifications are expected for Instructor positions at Sam Houston State University?
Most Instructor roles require at minimum a master's degree in the relevant discipline, though some departments require a doctorate. Teaching experience at the post-secondary level is valued, and departments often look for candidates whose degree field closely matches the courses they will teach. Foreign degrees should be evaluated for U.S. equivalency by a NACES-approved agency before applying.
How do I time my application to avoid gaps in work authorization?
Because Sam Houston State is cap-exempt, H-1B petitions can be filed at any point in the year, but the university still needs enough lead time to process paperwork. If you are on OPT with an expiring authorization, apply at least four to five months before your OPT end date and confirm with HR that the department can move quickly. USCIS premium processing is available if you need a faster decision.
