About The Opportunity
Job Summary: The Open6G group at the Institute for the Intelligent Networked Systems (INSI), Northeastern University, is leading research and development, testing and integration, and system integration for next-generation wireless systems. We envision programmable and intelligent cellular networks that can be dynamically and algorithmically instrumented and optimized through software and AI. We lead key research in Open Radio Access Network (RAN) systems, contributing to the O-RAN ALLIANCE, and we are a founding member of the AI-RAN Alliance. We work with an industry consortium of 20+ companies, driving research into new approaches and paradigms for cellular systems. Our private 5G/6G testbed features open and open-source software and commercial equipment, seamlessly integrated to provide an advance research, development, and integration environment to students and researchers in the Institute. We support multiple startups and established companies in their testing and integration needs, and we are the first O-RAN Open Testing and Integration Center (OTIC) to have released a certificate in North America.
Key Responsibilities
We are looking for Assoc/Sr/Principal/Research Scientist role who can lead research activities across the center, developing innovative solutions to rethink software, hardware, and systems for cellular networks. We consider research scientist/associate research scientist/principal research scientist according to the level of experience and research profile. The Research Scientist will lead federal, state, and industry funded research programs on programmable cellular networks, Open RAN, spectrum sharing, channel modeling and emulation, network automation, among others. This role involves activities related to ideation, design, and implementation of innovative solutions for next-generation cellular networks, AI for/and/on wireless, wireless testbeds, conducting experimental research and field trials. The RSs will be responsible for outreach and develop contributions for the O-RAN and AI-RAN Alliances to facilitate the transition of Open6G research into demonstrations and specifications. The Research Scientist will contribute to research development activities (grant writing, proposal ideation). Successful candidates have deep knowledge of cellular systems, 3GPP, open RAN, research in automation, embedded and/or RF systems, system engineering, and AI. The RSs will work in and coordinate with a multi-disciplinary, heterogeneous team, but also lead specific project features and tasks toward their complete implementation. Align your credentials to specialty occupation standards
Research roles at universities are scrutinized for specialty occupation eligibility under H-1B rules. Confirm your degree field directly maps to the specific research domain in the job description, not just to research broadly. USCIS reviews this distinction closely.
Target postdoctoral and research scientist postings specifically
Northeastern's sponsored Research roles tend to cluster around postdoctoral fellowships and research scientist titles tied to funded labs or grants. Filter your search for these designations, as they typically come with departmental sponsorship infrastructure already in place.
Ask about grant funding before accepting any offer
Sponsorship for Research positions at Northeastern is often tied to principal investigator grant cycles. Before signing, confirm whether the role is funded through a multi-year grant, since H-1B approval and renewal depend on continued employment with a financially able petitioner.
Use Migrate Mate to surface Northeastern Research openings
Research jobs with visa sponsorship aren't always labeled clearly on general job boards. Use Migrate Mate to browse Northeastern University Research roles filtered by visa type, so you're applying only where sponsorship is a confirmed option for your situation.
Understand J-1 timing before it affects your H-1B eligibility
Many international researchers enter Northeastern on J-1 exchange visitor status. If your J-1 carries a two-year home residency requirement, you'll need a waiver before USCIS will approve an H-1B change of status. Start that process well before your J-1 ends.
Prepare documentation of your research output early
Northeastern's international hiring process for Research roles moves faster when you can quickly provide publication records, citation metrics, and evidence of funded projects. Having these materials organized before interviews shortens the time between offer and petition filing.

Does Northeastern University sponsor H-1B visas for Researchs?
Yes, Northeastern University sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying Research roles. The university's Office of Global Services manages the petition process on behalf of hiring departments. Eligibility depends on the position meeting USCIS specialty occupation requirements and your degree field aligning directly with the research area of the role.
How do I apply for Research jobs at Northeastern University?
Applications go through Northeastern's careers portal, where Research positions are listed by department. For international candidates, Migrate Mate surfaces these openings filtered by visa sponsorship type, so you can prioritize roles where sponsorship has been confirmed. Tailor your application to the specific research domain and funding context of each posting.
Which visa types does Northeastern University commonly use for Research roles?
Northeastern sponsors H-1B and J-1 visas most frequently for Research positions, with J-1 used for postdoctoral and visiting researcher appointments and H-1B for longer-term research scientist and similar roles. F-1 OPT and CPT are also supported for students transitioning into research positions within the university. TN and EB-2/EB-3 immigrant visa pathways are available for eligible candidates pursuing permanent roles.
What qualifications are expected for Research roles at Northeastern University?
Most Research positions require at minimum a master's degree, with doctoral degrees expected for senior researcher, postdoctoral, and principal investigator-adjacent titles. Demonstrated research output, including peer-reviewed publications or funded project experience, carries significant weight. For H-1B eligibility, your degree field must correspond specifically to the research discipline of the role, not just to research generally.
How do I plan my timeline for H-1B sponsorship in a Research role at Northeastern University?
H-1B petitions are subject to an annual cap with a lottery in early April for an October 1 start date. If you're on F-1 OPT, confirm your OPT expiration date and whether a STEM OPT extension applies, since that can bridge the gap. Northeastern's hiring departments generally initiate sponsorship discussions during the offer stage, but you should raise your visa situation early in the interview process to avoid timeline conflicts.
