Align your credentials with U.S. standards
Northeastern evaluates Instructor candidates on degree equivalency and teaching experience. If your highest degree was earned outside the U.S., get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved agency before applying. A recognized equivalency removes friction early in the hiring process.
Target departments that hire repeatedly
Northeastern's College of Professional Studies and its health sciences and engineering programs consistently recruit instructors with international backgrounds. Focusing your applications on departments with active course loads increases your odds of landing a role that leads to sponsorship.
Understand how H-1B timing affects your start date
H-1B cap-subject petitions have an April 1 filing window and an October 1 start date. If Northeastern hires you outside that window, they may file under cap-exempt provisions available to higher education institutions, which allows year-round filing with no lottery.
Clarify sponsorship scope before accepting an offer
Northeastern sponsors several visa types for Instructor roles, including J-1, TN, and H-1B. Ask HR directly whether your specific role qualifies for H-1B and whether the university covers filing fees. These details are not always in the offer letter.
Use Migrate Mate to identify open Instructor postings
Instructor openings at Northeastern are posted across multiple channels and fill at different rates by department. Search Migrate Mate to filter Northeastern's active Instructor listings by visa type so you're only applying to roles where sponsorship is confirmed.
Prepare your PERM documentation early for permanent residency
If your goal is a Green Card through an EB-2 or EB-3 pathway, Northeastern will need to run a DOL PERM labor certification before filing your immigrant petition. That process can take one to two years, so raise your long-term immigration goals with HR during contract negotiations, not after.

Does Northeastern University sponsor H-1B visas for Instructors?
Yes, Northeastern University sponsors H-1B visas for Instructor roles. As a higher education institution, Northeastern qualifies as a cap-exempt H-1B employer, which means it can file petitions year-round without entering the annual lottery. This makes it significantly more predictable than applying through a private employer subject to the H-1B cap.
How do I apply for Instructor jobs at Northeastern University?
Applications go through Northeastern's careers portal at northeastern.edu/careers. Each Instructor posting lists the hiring department, required qualifications, and appointment type. You can also browse Northeastern's open Instructor roles filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility on Migrate Mate, which makes it easier to focus on positions where international candidates are actively being considered.
Which visa types does Northeastern University commonly use for Instructor roles?
Northeastern sponsors multiple visa types for Instructor positions, including H-1B, J-1, TN (for Canadian and Mexican nationals), F-1 OPT, and F-1 CPT for students in qualifying programs. For longer-term or tenure-track adjacent appointments, the university also supports EB-2 and EB-3 immigrant visa petitions through the PERM labor certification process with the DOL.
What qualifications does Northeastern University expect for Instructor roles?
Most Instructor roles at Northeastern require at minimum a master's degree in a relevant field, though doctoral credentials are preferred for many positions, particularly in graduate-level or research-adjacent programs. Teaching experience, industry background, and subject matter expertise in fields like health sciences, engineering, or professional studies can strengthen your candidacy even if your degree field is not an exact match.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for Instructor hires at Northeastern?
Timeline depends on visa type. J-1 Scholar sponsorship through Northeastern's International Affairs office typically takes four to eight weeks. H-1B filings under the cap-exempt higher education provision can take two to four months with standard USCIS processing. If you're pursuing a Green Card through PERM, factor in one to two years for the DOL labor certification stage alone before USCIS petition filing begins.
