Align your credentials with specialty occupation standards
UT Austin Instructor roles typically require a master's degree or higher in a directly related field. Before applying, confirm your degree field maps cleanly to the course subject you'd teach, since USCIS evaluates H-1B specialty occupation on that specific match.
Target departments with recurring instructional hiring
UT Austin's College of Liberal Arts, School of Engineering, and language-focused programs hire Instructors on a recurring cycle. Search the UT Austin Workday portal by department, not just job title, to surface openings before they close.
Time your application around UT Austin's academic calendar
Instructor hiring at UT Austin tends to cluster before the spring and fall semesters. Applying four to six months ahead aligns your timeline with both the hiring cycle and USCIS standard processing windows for H-1B cap-exempt institutions.
Use Migrate Mate to filter Instructor openings by visa type
Identifying which UT Austin postings actively welcome sponsorship candidates takes research. Migrate Mate lets you filter Instructor jobs at UT Austin by the visa types they support, so you spend time on roles where your status is a fit.
Prepare your DOL prevailing wage documentation early
UT Austin must file a Labor Condition Application with the DOL before your H-1B petition. Review the DOL's prevailing wage database for Instructor roles in Austin so you can flag any salary discrepancies with HR before the LCA is submitted.

Find Instructor at The University of Texas at Austin JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does The University of Texas at Austin sponsor H-1B visas for Instructors?
Yes. As a public research university, UT Austin qualifies as a cap-exempt H-1B employer, which means it can file H-1B petitions year-round without waiting for the annual lottery. Instructor roles that meet the specialty occupation standard, typically requiring a directly related master's degree or higher, are routinely supported through the university's international office.
Which visa types are commonly used for Instructor roles at The University of Texas at Austin?
H-1B is the most common pathway for Instructor positions at UT Austin, followed by E-3 for Australian citizens and TN for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying fields. F-1 OPT and F-1 CPT can bridge the gap while a longer-term petition is prepared. EB-2 and EB-3 immigrant visa sponsorship is available in some cases for continuing faculty.
What qualifications are expected for Instructor positions at The University of Texas at Austin?
Most Instructor roles at UT Austin require at minimum a master's degree in a field directly related to the courses you'll teach. Some departments, particularly in engineering and sciences, expect doctoral candidates or PhD holders. Demonstrated teaching experience, strong student evaluations, and subject-matter expertise in the specific curriculum area are standard expectations across departments.
How do I apply for Instructor jobs at The University of Texas at Austin?
Applications go through UT Austin's Workday-based careers portal. You'll typically submit a CV, cover letter, and teaching statement, with some departments requesting a teaching portfolio or sample syllabi. You can also browse Instructor openings at UT Austin filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility on Migrate Mate, which surfaces postings relevant to your immigration status.
How do I plan my timeline for visa sponsorship as an Instructor at UT Austin?
Because UT Austin is cap-exempt for H-1B, there's no lottery deadline to work around, but standard USCIS processing still takes three to five months without premium processing. Aim to have a signed offer letter at least four months before your intended start date. If you're transitioning from F-1 OPT, confirm your OPT expiration date and coordinate with UT Austin's international office early to avoid a gap in work authorization.
