Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Instructor Jobs at University of Utah Jobs
Align your credentials to specialty occupation standards
Instructor roles must qualify as specialty occupations for H-1B or E-3 sponsorship. Make sure your degree field directly matches your teaching discipline. A mismatch between your transcript and the course subject you'd teach is one of the most common petition complications at universities.
Target departments with active international hiring
STEM, business, and health sciences departments at the University of Utah hire international instructors more regularly than humanities programs. Search open postings by department, not just job title, to find units with a demonstrated pattern of sponsoring foreign nationals.
Browse open Instructor roles using Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters University of Utah Instructor postings by visa type, so you can focus only on roles where sponsorship is confirmed. This saves you from applying to positions where international candidates won't be considered.
Clarify sponsorship scope before accepting an offer
Universities often sponsor the initial petition but differ on whether they cover premium processing or Green Card sponsorship through PERM. Ask the hiring department directly what the university's policy covers before you negotiate terms or accept.
Prepare documentation for DOL prevailing wage compliance
For H-1B and E-3 filings, the university must certify your offered salary meets DOL prevailing wage levels for the Salt Lake City area. Gather evidence of your qualifications that supports the highest applicable wage level, since instructor compensation is often tiered by credentials.

Find Instructor at University of Utah JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of Utah sponsor H-1B visas for Instructors?
Yes, the University of Utah sponsors H-1B visas for Instructor roles where the position qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. The university's international hiring office manages the petition process, including the Labor Condition Application filing with DOL. Sponsorship is typically tied to a confirmed offer, so the process begins after the hiring department selects a candidate.
Which visa types are commonly used for Instructor roles at University of Utah?
The University of Utah sponsors H-1B, E-3, TN, J-1, and employment-based immigrant visas including EB-2 and EB-3 for Instructor positions. E-3 applies to Australian citizens, and TN applies to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying teaching roles. J-1 is commonly used for visiting or exchange instructors. F-1 OPT and CPT are options for current students moving into instructor roles within their authorized employment period.
What qualifications are expected for Instructor positions at University of Utah?
Most Instructor roles at the University of Utah require at minimum a master's degree in the relevant field, though some departments require a terminal degree such as a Ph.D. or MFA. Teaching experience, a record of subject-matter expertise, and familiarity with U.S. higher education formats strengthen your application. For visa sponsorship purposes, your degree must correspond directly to the discipline you'd be teaching.
How do I apply for Instructor jobs at University of Utah?
Applications go through the University of Utah's official careers portal, where postings list department, rank, and required qualifications. You can also use Migrate Mate to browse Instructor openings at the University of Utah filtered by visa type, so you apply only to roles where sponsorship is confirmed. Most postings ask for a CV, cover letter, teaching statement, and references.
How do I plan my timeline around the H-1B cap for an Instructor role?
Cap-subject H-1B petitions must be filed in April for an October 1 start date, which means you need an offer and completed LCA well before the lottery registration window opens in March. Universities are cap-exempt employers, so if the University of Utah files under the cap-exempt exemption, you're not constrained by the October start date and can begin sooner. Confirm with the hiring department which filing category applies to your specific role.
