Frame Your Credentials for Higher Education
Universities assess COO candidates differently than private employers. Translate your operational experience into academic institution terms: budget oversight for research programs, compliance with federal grant requirements, and multi-stakeholder governance all resonate strongly with UT Austin's hiring committees.
Target UT Austin's Institutional HR Early
UT Austin processes sponsorship through its central international office, not individual hiring managers. Reaching out to HR before an offer to understand their internal sponsorship workflow saves weeks and prevents surprises after you've already negotiated terms.
Align Your Timeline with Academic Hiring Cycles
Senior operations roles at universities typically open in the fall and spring semesters. If you're on OPT with an expiring authorization window, prioritize applications in August through October to give UT Austin enough runway to file an H-1B petition before your status lapses.
Prepare for PERM Labor Certification Early
For Green Card pathways under EB-2 or EB-3, UT Austin must complete a DOL PERM recruitment process before filing your immigrant petition. That process can take 12 to 18 months, so confirm the university's willingness to initiate it during offer negotiations, not after you've started.
Clarify E-3 Eligibility if You Hold Australian Citizenship
UT Austin sponsors the E-3 visa for Australian citizens, which bypasses the H-1B lottery entirely. COO roles qualify as specialty occupations, but confirm your degree field directly supports the operational leadership scope described in the job posting before the university files the Labor Condition Application with DOL.
Use Migrate Mate to Find Open COO Roles
Browsing for COO openings at a specific institution manually is slow and inconsistent. Use Migrate Mate to filter for COO positions at The University of Texas at Austin that actively support visa sponsorship, so you're only spending time on roles where sponsorship is already confirmed.

Find COO at The University of Texas at Austin JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does The University of Texas at Austin sponsor H-1B visas for COOs?
Yes. The University of Texas at Austin sponsors H-1B visas for COO and other senior operations roles that qualify as specialty occupations, which typically requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field. UT Austin's international office manages the petition process internally, and sponsorship eligibility is generally confirmed during the offer stage. If you're currently on OPT or another nonimmigrant status, flag your authorization timeline early so the university can plan the H-1B filing accordingly.
How do I apply for COO jobs at The University of Texas at Austin?
Applications go through UT Austin's official careers portal at jobs.utexas.edu, where senior leadership roles are posted directly. You can also browse COO openings at The University of Texas at Austin through Migrate Mate, which filters for positions that support visa sponsorship so you can confirm eligibility before applying. Tailor your application to highlight operational leadership within large, complex organizations, since UT Austin's COO function spans research, academic services, and administrative divisions.
Which visa types does The University of Texas at Austin commonly use for COO roles?
For COO positions, UT Austin most commonly sponsors the H-1B for specialty occupation workers and the E-3 for Australian citizens, which carries no lottery risk and can be renewed indefinitely. The university also supports TN status for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying management and professional categories. For longer-term immigration, UT Austin has sponsored Green Card pathways through EB-2 and EB-3 labor certification, and it accepts candidates on F-1 OPT or CPT for roles where employment authorization timing aligns.
What qualifications does The University of Texas at Austin expect for COO candidates?
UT Austin typically looks for candidates with extensive senior leadership experience managing large-scale operations, preferably within higher education, healthcare, or similarly complex institutional environments. A graduate degree in business administration, public administration, or a related field strengthens your application, and it also supports H-1B specialty occupation requirements. Direct experience with compliance, multi-departmental budgeting, and faculty or executive stakeholder management is weighted heavily in their evaluation process.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a COO role at UT Austin?
For an H-1B, USCIS standard processing runs three to five months after filing, though UT Austin can request premium processing to reduce that to 15 business days. E-3 consular processing in Australia typically takes two to four weeks once the Labor Condition Application is certified by DOL. If you're pursuing a Green Card through PERM, expect 12 to 18 months for labor certification alone before the immigrant petition is filed. Build these timelines into your negotiation before accepting an offer.
