Tailor your resume for academic IT environments
University engineering teams prioritize candidates who can work across departments with mixed technical maturity. Highlight experience supporting institutional systems, research infrastructure, or large-scale internal platforms rather than purely product-focused or startup-style work.
Identify which unit is hiring before you apply
UT Austin's Software Engineer roles are spread across central IT, individual colleges, research centers, and administrative units. Each hiring unit controls its own sponsorship decisions, so targeting roles within departments that regularly recruit internationally strengthens your odds significantly.
Confirm OPT or CPT eligibility before your start date
If you're on F-1 status, your OPT authorization must be active before day one. Universities are E-Verify participants, so employment cannot begin until your EAD is in hand and the USCIS work authorization check clears through the system.
Ask HR directly about H-1B cap-exempt status
As a public research university, UT Austin qualifies as a cap-exempt institution under USCIS rules, meaning H-1B petitions can be filed year-round without entering the annual lottery. Confirming this early removes a major source of timing uncertainty from your planning.
Use Migrate Mate to surface open Software Engineer roles at UT Austin
Filtering by employer and visa type saves significant time when you're targeting a specific institution. Migrate Mate lets you browse verified sponsoring employers and open roles in one place, so you're not cross-referencing job boards and DOL data manually.
Prepare for a longer hiring cycle than private sector roles
Public university hiring often involves committee review, departmental budget approval, and HR compliance steps that extend timelines well beyond what private employers typically run. Build at least two to three months into your timeline between application and an expected start date.

Find Software Engineer at The University of Texas at Austin JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does The University of Texas at Austin sponsor H-1B visas for Software Engineers?
Yes. UT Austin sponsors H-1B visas for Software Engineer roles and qualifies as a cap-exempt employer under USCIS rules because it is a nonprofit research university. This means petitions can be filed at any point in the year without going through the annual lottery, which removes a major timing obstacle for international applicants.
How do I apply for Software Engineer jobs at The University of Texas at Austin?
Roles are posted through UT Austin's official careers portal. Because positions are distributed across departments, colleges, and research units, you'll often find a better-filtered view by using Migrate Mate, which surfaces open Software Engineer roles at UT Austin alongside confirmed visa sponsorship information so you can prioritize the most relevant listings.
Which visa types does The University of Texas at Austin commonly use for Software Engineer roles?
UT Austin sponsors H-1B, E-3, TN, F-1 OPT, and F-1 CPT for Software Engineers, along with employment-based Green Card pathways including EB-2 and EB-3. Australian citizens benefit from the E-3 option, and Canadian or Mexican nationals may qualify under TN. Each visa type has different eligibility requirements and filing processes handled through the university's international office.
What qualifications are expected for Software Engineer roles at The University of Texas at Austin?
Most Software Engineer positions require a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field, which also satisfies the specialty occupation standard required for H-1B and E-3 sponsorship. Roles across research computing or enterprise systems may expect experience with specific languages or platforms relevant to the hiring unit's technical environment.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Software Engineer offer at UT Austin?
Because UT Austin is cap-exempt, H-1B petitions can be filed as soon as an offer is extended, without waiting for an April lottery window. Standard USCIS processing runs three to six months, though premium processing can reduce that to roughly two weeks. Factor in the university's internal hiring timeline, which often adds several weeks before a petition is even filed.
