Align your credentials with UT Austin's specialty occupation standards
UT Austin's international services office evaluates postdoctoral appointments against H-1B specialty occupation criteria. Get your doctoral transcripts officially translated and evaluated before applying, since degree equivalency reviews add weeks to the petition timeline.
Target departments with active international postdoc pipelines
Some UT Austin departments, particularly in STEM fields like Biomedical Engineering and Computational Sciences, hire international postdocs far more regularly than humanities units. Review recent faculty lab pages and publications for co-author affiliations to spot departments already comfortable with visa sponsorship.
Clarify sponsorship intent during the offer negotiation stage
UT Austin's HR and International Student and Scholar Services handle sponsorship separately. Confirm in writing during the offer stage which visa category the department intends to file, since some units default to OPT extensions before initiating H-1B or E-3 petitions.
Use Migrate Mate to identify open postdoctoral roles sponsoring your visa type
Not every UT Austin postdoctoral posting explicitly lists visa sponsorship. Use Migrate Mate to filter open Postdoctoral Researcher positions at UT Austin by the visa categories you're eligible for, so you're targeting roles with a confirmed sponsorship track record.
Account for the H-1B cap exemption in your timing strategy
As a nonprofit research university, UT Austin is cap-exempt for H-1B purposes, meaning petitions can be filed at any point in the year with no lottery. This removes the April registration deadline pressure that affects most employer-sponsored H-1B filings and gives you more flexibility when negotiating a start date.
Prepare for PERM labor market requirements if targeting a Green Card pathway
If your postdoc leads to an EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card, UT Austin must complete a DOL PERM process showing no qualified U.S. workers were available. Postdoctoral appointments are often temporary by design, so clarify early whether the department has a tenure-track or permanent position that would support a full PERM filing.

Find Postdoctoral Researcher at The University of Texas at Austin JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does The University of Texas at Austin sponsor H-1B visas for Postdoctoral Researchers?
Yes. UT Austin sponsors H-1B visas for Postdoctoral Researchers and qualifies as a cap-exempt institution, meaning it can file H-1B petitions year-round without going through the annual lottery. The university's International Student and Scholar Services office manages the petition process in coordination with the hiring department and USCIS.
How do I apply for Postdoctoral Researcher jobs at The University of Texas at Austin?
Applications go through UT Austin's official careers portal, where postdoctoral positions are posted by individual departments and research labs. You can also browse open Postdoctoral Researcher roles at UT Austin filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility on Migrate Mate. Most postings require a CV, research statement, and two or three letters of recommendation from doctoral supervisors or collaborators.
Which visa types does UT Austin commonly use for Postdoctoral Researchers?
UT Austin regularly sponsors H-1B, E-3, TN, and J-1 visas for postdoctoral roles, and supports F-1 OPT and CPT for researchers still within their degree-based work authorization window. The appropriate category depends on your nationality, degree status, and the duration of the appointment. Australian citizens are often funneled toward the E-3, which has no lottery and is administratively simpler for the university.
What qualifications are expected for Postdoctoral Researcher roles at UT Austin?
A completed doctoral degree in a relevant field is required, and most departments expect your PhD to have been awarded within the past five years. Strong publication records, lab-specific technical skills, and alignment with the supervising faculty member's active research agenda carry significant weight. Some competitive labs also expect prior postdoctoral experience or external fellowship funding.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a UT Austin postdoctoral appointment?
For H-1B and E-3 petitions, plan for six to twelve weeks from offer acceptance to USCIS or consular approval, not counting any time needed for degree credential evaluation. J-1 processing through UT Austin is often faster, sometimes two to four weeks once the DS-2019 is issued, but that visa type restricts certain employment changes later. Starting the process immediately after receiving your offer letter avoids delays to your start date.
