Align your credentials with specialty occupation standards
H-1B eligibility for Research roles hinges on the position requiring a specific bachelor's degree or higher. Document how your degree field directly maps to the research area, since USCIS scrutinizes this connection closely for university lab and institute positions.
Target UT Austin departments with active grant funding
Research positions tied to active federal grants, such as NIH or NSF-funded labs, move faster to hire and are more likely to initiate sponsorship quickly. Check UT Austin's research portfolio by department before applying to identify where demand is strongest.
Request an official offer letter before your OPT expires
F-1 OPT holders should confirm the department's internal HR timeline early in the process. UT Austin's international office requires coordination between the hiring department and their team, and that handoff can add weeks before USCIS paperwork even begins.
Understand how UT Austin handles E-3 versus H-1B filings
If you're an Australian citizen, the E-3 is cap-exempt and can be filed anytime, making it significantly faster than waiting for an H-1B lottery cycle. Confirm with UT Austin's international services office which pathway they've processed before for your specific Research role type.
Use Migrate Mate to find open Research roles at UT Austin
Filter by visa sponsorship type to surface Research postings where UT Austin has confirmed sponsorship support. Migrate Mate lets you narrow by role function so you're not sifting through unrelated positions across UT's large hiring volume.
Prepare for PERM timelines if permanent residence is a goal
Research staff roles at universities can qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship through the PERM labor certification process, which DOL currently processes over many months. Ask during the offer stage whether the department has sponsored PERM applications for comparable Research positions before.

Find Research at The University of Texas at Austin JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does The University of Texas at Austin sponsor H-1B visas for Researchs?
Yes, The University of Texas at Austin sponsors H-1B visas for Research roles where the position qualifies as a specialty occupation. UT Austin's international office coordinates the filing process with the hiring department. Because universities are cap-subject employers, H-1B petitions must be submitted in April for an October 1 start date unless the candidate qualifies for a cap-exempt situation.
How do I apply for Research jobs at The University of Texas at Austin?
Applications go through UT Austin's official jobs portal at utaustin.edu, where Research positions are listed by department. You can also browse open Research roles where UT Austin has active visa sponsorship through Migrate Mate, which filters specifically for sponsored positions. Tailor your CV to the research area and note your visa status early in the application process.
Which visa types does The University of Texas at Austin commonly use for Research roles?
UT Austin sponsors H-1B, E-3, TN, and F-1 OPT and CPT for Research positions, depending on the candidate's nationality and status. For longer-term Research staff, EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship through PERM is also available in some departments. The right pathway depends on your degree, citizenship, and the specific position's requirements.
What qualifications are expected for Research roles at The University of Texas at Austin?
Most Research positions at UT Austin require at minimum a bachelor's degree in a directly related field, with many lab and institute roles expecting a master's or doctoral degree. Relevant research experience, familiarity with specific methodologies or equipment, and in some cases prior publication or grant work are common expectations. Requirements vary significantly by department and funding source.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Research role at UT Austin?
H-1B sponsorship follows a fixed government timeline, with the cap-subject lottery opening in March and employment beginning October 1 at the earliest. E-3 and TN sponsorship move faster, often within four to eight weeks of an offer. PERM-based Green Card cases filed with DOL currently take over a year before USCIS petition filing even begins, so plan accordingly.
