Tips for Finding Education Jobs at Oakland University
Align your credentials to U.S. equivalency standards
Oakland University hiring committees evaluate foreign degrees against U.S. equivalents. Get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved agency before applying, particularly if your terminal degree is from outside the U.S. This step directly affects how your qualifications are assessed during faculty review.
Target roles with dedicated FLSA-exempt status
Faculty and research positions at universities like Oakland are typically classified as specialty occupations under USCIS criteria, which strengthens H-1B eligibility. Focus your search on tenure-track, lecturer, or postdoctoral roles where the degree requirement is explicit in the job posting.
Search open Education positions through Migrate Mate
Oakland University posts education roles across multiple channels, but filtering for sponsorship-friendly positions takes time. Use Migrate Mate to browse current Education openings at Oakland University and identify which roles are actively open to international candidates.
Request LCA filing details before accepting an offer
Before signing an offer letter, confirm that Oakland University's HR team has initiated the Labor Condition Application with DOL. LCA certification must precede any H-1B petition filing, and delays at this stage can push your start date beyond your current visa status expiration.
Understand how university hiring cycles affect your timeline
Higher education hiring for faculty roles typically closes in fall for positions starting the following academic year. If you're targeting an October 1 H-1B start date, the offer and petition prep process needs to begin well before the April USCIS filing window opens.
Prepare for PERM if permanent residence is your goal
Oakland University can sponsor eligible education employees for EB-2 or EB-3 Green Cards through the PERM labor certification process administered by DOL. Start this conversation during onboarding, as PERM recruitment and filing timelines often span one to two years before an I-140 petition can be submitted.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Oakland University sponsor H-1B visas for Education roles?
Yes, Oakland University sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying Education positions, particularly faculty, research, and professional staff roles that meet the specialty occupation standard under USCIS guidelines. The university works with international candidates through its HR and legal teams to manage LCA filings with DOL and H-1B petitions with USCIS. Sponsorship is most common for roles requiring a specific advanced degree.
How do I apply for Education jobs at Oakland University?
Applications for Education positions at Oakland University are submitted through the university's official careers portal, where you'll find postings for faculty, administrative, and research roles. Migrate Mate also lists Oakland University's open Education jobs in one place, letting you filter for roles where international candidates are considered. Tailor your application materials to the specific department and degree requirements listed in the posting.
Which visa types does Oakland University commonly use for Education positions?
Oakland University sponsors H-1B visas for specialty occupation roles in education, including faculty and research staff positions. The university also works with F-1 OPT and CPT for students transitioning into staff or research roles, TN visas for eligible Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying education occupations, and EB-2 or EB-3 immigrant visa categories for employees pursuing permanent residence through PERM labor certification.
What qualifications are typically expected for Education roles at Oakland University?
Expectations vary significantly by role type. Tenure-track and lecturer faculty positions generally require a terminal degree in the relevant discipline, such as a Ph.D. or equivalent. Academic advising, student affairs, and administrative education roles may require a master's degree and relevant professional experience. For H-1B eligibility, the position itself must require a specific bachelor's degree or higher as a standard entry requirement, not a preferred qualification.
How do visa filing timelines affect starting an Education role at Oakland University?
If your role requires a new H-1B petition, the earliest you can begin work under a cap-subject H-1B is October 1, the start of the federal fiscal year. USCIS opens the filing window in April, meaning Oakland University needs to extend you an offer and complete LCA certification with DOL well before that deadline. Premium processing through USCIS is available to accelerate adjudication to roughly 15 business days if your timeline is tight.
