Align your credentials to U.S. academic standards
Oakland University expects Professors to hold a terminal degree in their field. If your doctorate was earned outside the U.S., obtain a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved service before applying so hiring committees can assess your qualifications without delays.
Target departments with active faculty searches
Oakland University posts faculty openings through its HR portal by department and academic unit. Focusing on schools with open-rank or tenure-track listings increases the likelihood of finding a position structured around long-term employment, which supports an H-1B or PERM sponsorship path.
Use Migrate Mate to filter verified sponsorship roles
Not every faculty posting at Oakland University explicitly states visa sponsorship availability. Use Migrate Mate to filter Professor roles by confirmed sponsorship history so you're only investing time in applications where your visa situation is a known fit.
Understand how F-1 OPT bridges into H-1B for academics
If you're completing a U.S. doctoral program, F-1 OPT gives you up to 12 months of work authorization, extendable to 36 months for STEM fields. Securing a faculty offer before OPT expires positions Oakland University to file your H-1B petition with USCIS before the annual April 1 filing window.
Ask HR directly about the PERM timeline for your role
Tenure-track Professor positions at Oakland University often support EB-2 or EB-3 permanent residence filings through the PERM labor certification process with DOL. Clarifying whether your offer letter includes a green card sponsorship commitment before signing saves you from renegotiating later.
Prepare a teaching portfolio that accelerates the LCA process
Oakland University's HR team files a Labor Condition Application with DOL as the first step in any H-1B petition. Having your CV, publication record, and syllabi organized in advance lets them document the specialty occupation requirement accurately and avoid a Request for Evidence from USCIS.

Does Oakland University sponsor H-1B visas for Professors?
Yes, Oakland University sponsors H-1B visas for Professor roles. The process begins with the university filing a Labor Condition Application with the DOL, followed by an H-1B petition submitted to USCIS. Faculty positions are well-suited to H-1B sponsorship because they qualify as specialty occupations requiring a specific academic background, which is a core H-1B eligibility requirement.
How do I apply for Professor jobs at Oakland University?
Applications for Professor positions at Oakland University are submitted through the university's official HR job portal, where each faculty posting lists required materials such as a cover letter, CV, teaching statement, and research statement. You can also browse confirmed visa-sponsoring Professor openings at Oakland University through Migrate Mate, which filters roles by sponsorship history to help you prioritize applications efficiently.
Which visa types does Oakland University commonly use for Professor hires?
Oakland University sponsors several visa categories for faculty, including H-1B for specialty occupation workers, TN for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying academic roles, and F-1 OPT or CPT for candidates completing U.S. graduate programs. For long-term hires, the university also supports EB-2 and EB-3 immigrant visa petitions through the PERM labor certification process with DOL, which is common for tenure-track appointments.
What qualifications does Oakland University expect for Professor roles?
Most Professor positions at Oakland University require a terminal degree in the relevant discipline, typically a Ph.D. or equivalent. Research universities like Oakland also expect a demonstrated publication record, teaching experience at the university level, and evidence of active scholarship. For professional practice roles in fields like business or engineering, significant industry experience may substitute for or complement the academic record.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Professor hired at Oakland University?
The timeline depends on the visa type. An H-1B petition filed under standard processing with USCIS typically takes three to six months; premium processing can reduce this to around 15 business days. If Oakland University pursues PERM-based permanent residence, the full process from labor certification through immigrant visa approval often spans two to four years, depending on your country of birth and priority date movement.
