Align your credentials to NC State's specialty
NC State's strongest hiring is in STEM, agriculture, and design disciplines. Before applying, confirm your foreign degree is evaluated by a NACES-recognized credential service so your qualifications translate clearly to a U.S. faculty hiring committee.
Target departments with active faculty searches
Faculty positions at NC State are posted at the department level, not just centrally. Check individual college websites alongside the main careers portal, since departments sometimes post searches earlier and with more detail about sponsorship eligibility.
Understand how J-1 fits your timeline
NC State regularly uses J-1 visas for visiting and exchange faculty roles. If you're early in your academic career, a J-1 appointment can bridge to a tenure-track offer, but confirm whether a two-year home residency requirement applies to your situation before accepting.
Ask about PERM timing during offer negotiations
For tenure-track Professor roles, NC State typically initiates PERM-based Green Card sponsorship once you're hired. DOL's PERM process requires a formal recruitment audit, so ask HR which stage in your contract cycle they begin that filing.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open Professor roles
Searching broadly across university job boards wastes time when you need sponsorship-confirmed listings. Migrate Mate lets you filter Professor openings at NC State by visa type so you focus only on roles where sponsorship is actively available.
Prepare your H-1B cap-exempt paperwork early
As a public research university, NC State qualifies as a cap-exempt H-1B employer, meaning petitions can be filed year-round without waiting for the annual lottery. Have your academic credentials, publications, and offer letter ready so USCIS filing can begin quickly after your appointment is confirmed.

Find Professor at North Carolina State University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does North Carolina State University sponsor H-1B visas for Professors?
Yes. NC State is a cap-exempt institution, which means it can file H-1B petitions with USCIS at any time of year without entering the annual lottery. This is a significant advantage for international faculty candidates, since you're not limited to an October start date and sponsorship can begin as soon as your faculty appointment is confirmed.
How do I apply for Professor jobs at North Carolina State University?
Applications are submitted through NC State's HR portal and, in many cases, directly through the hiring department's own listings. You'll typically need a cover letter, curriculum vitae, research and teaching statements, and references. Faculty searches are competitive and department-specific, so tailoring your materials to the college's research focus matters. Migrate Mate also lists open Professor roles at NC State filtered by visa sponsorship availability, which helps you prioritize where to apply.
Which visa types does NC State commonly use for Professor roles?
NC State sponsors a range of visa categories for faculty depending on the appointment type. H-1B is the most common route for tenure-track and teaching positions. J-1 is frequently used for visiting scholars, postdoctoral researchers, and short-term faculty appointments. TN visas are available for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying academic disciplines. For permanent positions, EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card sponsorship through the PERM process is typically initiated after hiring.
What qualifications does NC State expect for Professor roles?
A terminal degree in the relevant field is the baseline requirement for most Professor positions, which at NC State typically means a Ph.D. or equivalent. For tenure-track roles, a demonstrated research agenda, peer-reviewed publications, and prior teaching experience are expected. Clinical or professional Professor tracks may weigh industry credentials more heavily. Foreign degrees generally need to be evaluated by a NACES-recognized credential assessment service to confirm U.S. equivalency during the hiring process.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for an NC State Professor role?
For H-1B, USCIS standard processing takes three to five months after filing, though NC State's HR team typically initiates paperwork once an offer is signed. Because NC State is cap-exempt, there's no waiting period tied to the annual lottery cycle. PERM-based Green Card sponsorship, when pursued, involves DOL recruitment audits and adjudication that can take one to three years in total depending on your priority date and country of birth.
