Align your CV to U.S. academic standards
U.S. faculty CVs differ from international academic formats. List publications in reverse chronological order, separate teaching from research experience, and include grant funding explicitly. UVA hiring committees evaluate these documents before any visa conversation begins.
Target departments with active doctoral programs
UVA departments running active Ph.D. programs hire internationally more consistently than those without graduate training functions. Research faculty in STEM, law, medicine, and the social sciences represent your strongest entry points for sponsored Professor roles.
Understand the E-3 option if you hold Australian citizenship
Australian citizens qualify for the E-3 visa, which has no lottery and can be filed directly at a U.S. consulate without a USCIS petition. For a UVA Professor role, this path is significantly faster than H-1B and worth raising early with your department contact.
Ask about PERM sponsorship during the offer stage
UVA sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards for faculty through the PERM labor certification process. Raise the question of long-term sponsorship before you sign an offer letter. PERM timelines from DOL currently run 18 to 24 months, so earlier initiation matters.
Find open Professor roles using Migrate Mate
Filtering by employer and role type manually is slow. Use Migrate Mate to browse current Professor openings at UVA filtered by visa sponsorship type, so you only spend time on positions where sponsorship is already confirmed.
Prepare your credentials for H-1B specialty occupation documentation
USCIS requires evidence that a Professor role qualifies as a specialty occupation. Gather your foreign degree equivalency evaluation, official transcripts, and any U.S. credential assessments before UVA's HR team begins the I-129 preparation process.

Find Professor at University of Virginia JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of Virginia sponsor H-1B visas for Professors?
Yes, University of Virginia sponsors H-1B visas for Professor roles. UVA's international faculty hiring process includes H-1B petitions filed through USCIS, covering both cap-subject and cap-exempt filings. As a qualifying higher education institution, UVA is cap-exempt, meaning H-1B petitions for faculty can be filed at any time of year without waiting for the annual lottery.
How do I apply for Professor jobs at University of Virginia?
Professor positions at UVA are posted through the university's official jobs portal, and applications typically require a cover letter, curriculum vitae, research and teaching statements, and contact information for references. You can also browse current openings filtered by visa sponsorship type on Migrate Mate, which lets you identify UVA Professor roles where sponsorship is already confirmed before you apply.
Which visa types does University of Virginia commonly use for Professor roles?
UVA uses H-1B as the primary nonimmigrant visa for Professor roles, with E-3 available as an alternative pathway for Australian citizens. For long-term employment authorization, UVA supports employment-based Green Card sponsorship through EB-2 and EB-3 categories, which typically involve the PERM labor certification process filed with the Department of Labor.
What qualifications does University of Virginia expect for Professor roles?
Most Professor positions at UVA require a terminal degree in the relevant discipline, typically a Ph.D. or equivalent. Research faculty roles also require a demonstrated publication record and, depending on seniority, evidence of external grant funding. Clinical and professional faculty positions may prioritize licensure and industry experience over traditional research output.
How do I understand the timeline for visa sponsorship at UVA once I receive an offer?
Because UVA is cap-exempt as a higher education institution, H-1B petitions can be filed with USCIS year-round, which removes the April lottery constraint that affects most employers. Standard H-1B processing runs three to five months, with premium processing available for faster adjudication. PERM-based Green Card sponsorship is a separate, longer process that typically begins after H-1B status is secured.
