About the Department
The History Department is a diverse group of scholars covering many areas of specialization. We pride ourselves on outstanding teaching. We offer small classes that allow a great deal of individual attention. The History major is a place to get a “small college” education in a big state university.
The department of thirty professors has about two hundred fifty majors in three undergraduate programs—the Bachelor of Arts, the Bachelor of Arts with a Teacher Education Concentration, the Bachelor of Arts with a Legal History Concentration, and the Bachelor of Sciences. All programs offer a great deal of student choice in courses and electives, allowing the pursuit of either a broad educational experience or a focused study.
Our 80 student graduate program offers three distinct degrees: the M.A. in History, the M.A. in Public History, and the Ph.D. in Public History. However, all three degree programs require a strong foundation in traditional history.

Align your degree with your TA assignment
NC State's visa sponsorship for Teaching Assistants depends on your graduate appointment matching your field of study. Make sure your academic credentials clearly support the specific department or course you'll be assisting with before applying.
Target departments with active graduate funding
NC State's STEM and engineering departments consistently fund Teaching Assistant positions with full tuition waivers and stipends. Applying directly through faculty advisors in high-enrollment graduate programs increases your chances of landing a sponsored appointment.
Prepare for the H-1B filing window during your appointment
If your TA role transitions to a longer-term academic position, NC State can file an H-1B petition through USCIS. The cap-subject lottery opens in March, so your employer must initiate the process well in advance of the April 1 filing period.
Use Migrate Mate to find open TA positions at NC State
Teaching Assistant openings at NC State are spread across dozens of departments and rarely consolidated in one place. Use Migrate Mate to browse current visa-sponsored TA roles at NC State filtered by visa type, so you can target positions that match your authorization.

Find Teaching Assistant at North Carolina State University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does North Carolina State University sponsor H-1B visas for Teaching Assistants?
Yes, NC State sponsors H-1B visas for Teaching Assistants, particularly when a position transitions into or is structured as a professional academic staff role. Graduate Teaching Assistants on F-1 status typically use CPT or OPT first. For longer-term appointments, NC State's Office of Global Engagement coordinates H-1B petitions through USCIS, and sponsorship is most common in STEM and research-intensive departments.
How do I apply for Teaching Assistant jobs at North Carolina State University?
Most Teaching Assistant positions at NC State are tied to graduate program admissions rather than standalone job postings. You'll apply through individual department graduate programs, and TA appointments are often offered alongside admission offers. For postdoctoral or non-student TA roles, check NC State's HR portal directly or use Migrate Mate to browse open visa-sponsored Teaching Assistant positions across departments.
Which visa types does NC State commonly use for Teaching Assistant roles?
NC State uses several visa types for Teaching Assistants depending on your status. F-1 students use CPT or OPT to work as TAs while enrolled. J-1 exchange visitor status is common for international graduate appointees. H-1B sponsorship applies when roles meet specialty occupation criteria. TN and E-3 visas are options for Canadian, Mexican, and Australian nationals in qualifying academic positions.
What qualifications does NC State expect for Teaching Assistant positions?
NC State Teaching Assistants are typically enrolled graduate students or qualified academic professionals with subject-matter expertise in the course they support. Most departments require at least a bachelor's degree in a related field, with preference for candidates holding or pursuing a master's or doctoral degree. For international applicants, English language proficiency documentation is often required before a TA appointment is confirmed.
How do I time my visa application around a Teaching Assistant offer from NC State?
Timing depends on your current status. F-1 students need CPT authorization from NC State's Office of Global Engagement before starting, which can take one to two weeks. OPT applications to USCIS should be filed up to 90 days before your program end date. For J-1 or H-1B appointments, NC State initiates sponsorship after the formal offer, so confirm your start date and visa type with the hiring department as early as possible.
