Align Your Degree Field With Your TA Section
WVU assigns Teaching Assistants to sections directly related to their academic discipline. Your application materials should make the degree-to-course connection explicit, since immigration petitions for TA roles hinge on demonstrating that your field of study matches the position.
Secure OPT or CPT Authorization Before Your Start Date
If you're on an F-1 visa, your Designated School Official must authorize OPT or CPT through WVU's Office of Global Affairs before you begin working. Post-completion OPT gives you 12 months, with a 24-month STEM extension if your program qualifies.
Understand When WVU Transitions TAs to H-1B
Universities typically initiate H-1B sponsorship when a TA moves into a longer-term staff or research role. Ask the hiring department directly at the offer stage whether the position is structured to support an H-1B petition, so you know what timeline to plan around.
Request a Written Sponsorship Commitment Before Signing
Before accepting a TA offer, confirm in writing which visa category WVU's international office will file under and who covers the filing fees. USCIS requires the employer to pay certain H-1B fees, and universities handle this differently than corporate employers.
Research Open TA Roles Filtered by Visa Sponsorship on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to browse Teaching Assistant openings at WVU filtered by sponsorship eligibility. It surfaces roles where international candidates are actively considered, saving you the time of applying to positions that won't move forward your visa situation.
Prepare Transcripts and Credential Evaluations Early
WVU's graduate admissions and HR teams often request official transcripts or foreign credential evaluations before processing a TA appointment. If your degree is from outside the U.S., a NACES-member evaluation service can take several weeks, so start that process well before any offer deadline.

Does West Virginia University sponsor H-1B visas for Teaching Assistants?
Yes. WVU has an established international hiring process and sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying roles, including Teaching Assistant positions that meet USCIS specialty occupation criteria. Sponsorship is most common when the role transitions into a longer-term appointment. You should confirm the specific position's sponsorship eligibility with WVU's Office of Global Affairs during the offer stage.
How do I apply for Teaching Assistant jobs at West Virginia University?
Applications for Teaching Assistant roles at WVU are submitted through the university's official jobs portal. Graduate TA positions are often tied to departmental funding, so contacting faculty or program coordinators directly in your discipline can surface openings before they're formally posted. Migrate Mate also lists WVU Teaching Assistant roles filtered for international candidates, which speeds up your search considerably.
Which visa types does West Virginia University use for Teaching Assistant roles?
WVU supports several visa categories for Teaching Assistants depending on your situation. F-1 students working as TAs during their program use CPT or OPT authorized through the university. J-1 exchange visitor visas are common for international teaching appointments. For longer-term or post-graduate TA staff roles, WVU may sponsor H-1B or, for permanent residence pathways, EB-2 or EB-3 classifications.
What qualifications does West Virginia University expect for Teaching Assistant positions?
Most WVU Teaching Assistant roles require enrollment in or completion of a relevant graduate program, with the expectation that your field of study matches the course you'll support. Strong subject matter knowledge, prior undergraduate-level coursework in the discipline, and in some departments, prior tutoring or instructional experience are common expectations. Some STEM departments also expect demonstrated research involvement.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a WVU Teaching Assistant role?
Timeline depends on the visa category. F-1 CPT authorization through WVU can be processed within a few weeks before a semester starts. OPT requires filing with USCIS up to 90 days before your program end date, so plan at least three to four months out. H-1B petitions have an October 1 start date tied to the annual cap cycle, which means WVU must file in April for roles beginning that fall.
