Align your credentials to medical education standards
KUMC Teaching Assistant roles typically require subject-matter depth in health sciences, not just general teaching experience. Frame your academic background around clinical curriculum support, lab instruction, or graduate-level coursework relevant to KUMC's programs before applying.
Clarify your OPT or CPT eligibility early
If you're on F-1 status, confirm whether the role qualifies as CPT or OPT-eligible employment through your Designated School Official before your first interview. KUMC's international student office can coordinate with hiring departments, but you need to initiate that conversation.
Target departments with active graduate programs
KUMC Teaching Assistant openings cluster around departments running active graduate and professional programs. Identify which schools within the medical center are actively recruiting by searching their faculty pages and graduate program listings, not just the central careers portal.
Understand how H-1B sponsorship fits the TA role
Teaching Assistant positions at academic medical centers like KUMC can qualify as specialty occupations under H-1B, but your offer letter must clearly define degree requirements for the role. Work with KUMC's HR team to confirm the position description supports an H-1B filing before accepting.
Use Migrate Mate to find open TA roles at KUMC
Browse current Teaching Assistant openings at University of Kansas Medical Center that are open to visa sponsorship using Migrate Mate. Filtering by role and sponsorship type saves significant time compared to manually checking institutional job boards.
Start the PERM process conversation before your offer expires
If long-term sponsorship toward an EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card is your goal, raise it with KUMC's HR during negotiation, not after onboarding. PERM labor certification takes 12 to 18 months minimum, and academic employers need lead time to build the required recruitment record.

Find Teaching Assistant at University of Kansas Medical Center JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of Kansas Medical Center sponsor H-1B visas for Teaching Assistants?
Yes, University of Kansas Medical Center sponsors H-1B visas for Teaching Assistant roles where the position qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a relevant bachelor's degree or higher. Academic institutions like KUMC are cap-exempt, meaning they can file H-1B petitions year-round without waiting for the annual lottery. Confirm with KUMC's HR that your specific role description supports the specialty occupation standard before the offer is finalized.
How do I apply for Teaching Assistant jobs at University of Kansas Medical Center?
Applications go through KUMC's official HR careers portal, where Teaching Assistant postings are listed by department. You can also use Migrate Mate to browse current KUMC Teaching Assistant openings filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility. Tailor your application to the specific department's academic focus, whether that's clinical sciences, basic research, or health professions education, since hiring decisions are largely department-driven at KUMC.
Which visa types are commonly used for Teaching Assistant roles at University of Kansas Medical Center?
The most common visa pathways for Teaching Assistants at KUMC are H-1B, J-1, and F-1 OPT or CPT. J-1 exchange visitor visas are frequently used for academic roles at medical institutions and can be sponsored directly through the department. F-1 students completing graduate programs at KUMC may use CPT during enrollment or OPT after graduation. H-1B is the primary option for longer-term employment beyond OPT.
What qualifications are expected for Teaching Assistant positions at University of Kansas Medical Center?
Most Teaching Assistant roles at KUMC require enrollment in or completion of a relevant graduate or professional degree program, often in health sciences, biomedical research, or a related field. Practical experience in laboratory instruction, clinical education support, or curriculum development strengthens your application. For H-1B eligibility, the role must require a specific bachelor's degree or higher, so roles with vague educational requirements may not qualify for that visa category.
How do I plan my timeline if I need visa sponsorship for a Teaching Assistant role at KUMC?
Timeline depends on your current status. F-1 OPT gives you up to 12 months of post-graduation work authorization, with a possible 24-month STEM extension for qualifying fields. Because KUMC is cap-exempt, H-1B petitions can be filed any time of year and USCIS standard processing runs two to four months. For employment-based Green Card sponsorship through PERM, expect a multi-year process, so align that discussion with KUMC HR as early as possible.
