Align your degree field with the department
USU departments typically require Teaching Assistants to hold a degree in the subject they'll be teaching or assisting. Make sure your transcripts clearly reflect that alignment before applying, since a mismatch is the most common reason TA candidates get screened out early.
Apply through USU's graduate school admissions
Many Teaching Assistant positions at USU are tied directly to graduate program enrollment. Applying through the relevant department's graduate admissions process, rather than only through the general jobs portal, puts you in front of faculty who control TA allocations.
Search open TA roles by department on Migrate Mate
USU posts Teaching Assistant openings across many departments, and availability shifts each semester. Use Migrate Mate to filter active TA roles at USU by visa type so you're only targeting positions where sponsorship is already on the table.
Request your SEVIS transfer before accepting the offer
If you're transferring from another U.S. institution on F-1 status, your SEVIS record must be transferred to USU's DSO before your employment can begin. Initiating this before you sign the offer letter prevents gaps in work authorization that delay your TA start date.

Find Teaching Assistant at Utah State University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Utah State University sponsor H-1B visas for Teaching Assistants?
Yes, Utah State University sponsors H-1B visas for Teaching Assistant roles that meet the specialty occupation standard, which typically requires a master's or doctoral degree in a directly related field. Sponsorship is coordinated through USU's Office of Research and Graduate Studies. Because H-1B has an annual cap and lottery, timing your application cycle with your anticipated start date is critical.
How do I apply for Teaching Assistant jobs at Utah State University?
Most TA positions at USU are filled through the graduate school application process rather than the general hiring portal. You apply to the relevant graduate program, and the department assigns or offers TA appointments to admitted students. For standalone TA openings not tied to graduate admissions, positions are listed on USU's official careers site. Migrate Mate also aggregates USU's open TA roles filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility.
Which visa types does Utah State University commonly use for Teaching Assistant roles?
USU sponsors a range of visa categories for Teaching Assistants, including H-1B, J-1, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, TN, and EB-2 or EB-3 immigrant visas for longer-term appointments. J-1 is frequently used for shorter academic appointments given its faster processing timeline. F-1 CPT and OPT are common for graduate students already enrolled at USU who take on TA assignments as part of their program.
What qualifications does Utah State University expect for Teaching Assistant positions?
USU generally requires Teaching Assistants to be enrolled in or hold a graduate degree in the relevant subject area. Departments look for prior coursework in the subject being taught, strong academic standing, and in some cases prior tutoring or instructional experience. For sponsored positions, your degree field needs to directly support the specialty occupation classification that USCIS uses to evaluate H-1B petitions.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a USU Teaching Assistant role?
Timeline depends on the visa type. J-1 sponsorship through USU can take four to six weeks once your DS-2019 is issued. H-1B requires USCIS processing, which runs three to six months under regular service or two to three weeks with premium processing. F-1 OPT authorization from USCIS can take up to 90 days, so you should file as early as the program allows relative to your TA start date.
