Align your CV to U.S. academic standards
U.S. faculty CVs differ from international formats. List teaching experience, publications, grants, and service commitments separately. Hiring committees at Utah State review these categories closely when assessing whether a candidate meets specialty occupation standards for H-1B filing.
Target departments with active research funding
Departments with active federal grants, such as those in STEM or agriculture, hire international faculty more regularly. Check Utah State's College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences or the College of Engineering for open searches that historically support sponsored positions.
Clarify sponsorship intent before the offer stage
Ask the search committee directly whether the position is approved for H-1B or PERM sponsorship. Some Utah State departments route sponsorship through university HR centrally, so knowing who handles it early prevents delays after an offer is extended.
Understand the PERM timeline for tenure-track roles
Tenure-track Professor roles often qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship via PERM. The DOL's PERM process typically takes 12 to 18 months before an I-140 can be filed, so start the green card conversation with HR soon after your first H-1B is approved.
Browse Professor openings on Migrate Mate
Filtering by sponsorship history saves significant time in your search. Migrate Mate lets you identify Utah State University Professor roles where visa sponsorship has been documented, so you apply to positions with a real pathway rather than guessing.
Prepare your J-1 waiver documentation early if applicable
If you are currently on a J-1 exchange visitor visa with a two-year home residency requirement, securing a waiver is a prerequisite before Utah State can file an H-1B on your behalf. Contact USCIS or your home country's embassy well before accepting an offer.

Does Utah State University sponsor H-1B visas for Professors?
Yes, Utah State University sponsors H-1B visas for Professor roles. Faculty positions in specialty fields, including those requiring a specific advanced degree, typically meet the specialty occupation standard required for H-1B approval. Sponsorship is generally coordinated through the university's Office of Human Resources, and the process begins after a formal offer is extended.
How do I apply for Professor jobs at Utah State University?
Open faculty positions are posted on Utah State University's official careers portal. You'll submit a cover letter, a U.S.-formatted academic CV, teaching and research statements, and contact information for references. Some searches also require a diversity statement. Migrate Mate also lists Utah State Professor openings with sponsorship context, which can help you prioritize which roles to pursue.
Which visa types does Utah State University commonly use for Professor roles?
Utah State University uses several visa pathways for international faculty. H-1B is the most common for full-time Professor roles. J-1 is frequently used for visiting faculty and postdoctoral researchers. TN visas are available for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying academic occupations. For long-term faculty, the university may sponsor EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card petitions through the PERM labor certification process.
What qualifications does Utah State University expect for Professor positions?
Requirements vary by department and rank, but tenure-track Professor roles typically require a completed doctoral degree in a relevant field. Assistant Professor candidates are expected to demonstrate an active research agenda and evidence of teaching effectiveness. Senior ranks require a record of publication, grant funding, and service. For H-1B purposes, your degree must align specifically with the duties of the posted role.
How do I time the visa process when accepting a Professor offer at Utah State University?
H-1B petitions for Professor roles must be filed with USCIS before your intended start date, and cap-subject petitions are only accepted starting April 1 for an October 1 start. If you are transitioning from F-1 OPT or CPT, confirm your OPT expiration date and whether a cap-exempt filing applies. Discuss the timeline with Utah State HR as early as possible to avoid gaps in work authorization.
