Align your credentials to U.S. academic standards
Foreign degrees are evaluated differently across departments. Request a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved service before applying, so hiring committees can quickly confirm your qualification meets the field's standard degree requirement for the role.
Target departments with documented sponsorship history
Not every department at Oakland University hires the same way. Search DOL OFLC disclosure data to identify which academic units have filed Labor Condition Applications for Teaching roles, then prioritize those departments in your outreach.
Understand the academic calendar's effect on timelines
University hiring cycles run months ahead of the start date. For H-1B cap-subject positions, USCIS's April 1 filing window means your offer letter and LCA must be completed well before October, so begin conversations with departments no later than the prior fall.
Clarify OPT and CPT eligibility before your first interview
If you're on an F-1 visa, Oakland University can engage you under OPT or CPT for Teaching roles before a long-term petition is filed. Confirm your program's field of study aligns with the position, since USCIS scrutinizes whether the work falls within your authorized field.
Use Migrate Mate to filter Teaching openings by sponsorship type
Oakland University posts Teaching roles across multiple channels. Use Migrate Mate to filter open positions by the visa categories the university sponsors, so you apply only to roles where sponsorship is already part of the hiring framework.
Ask the department about PERM timing before accepting an offer
For Green Card sponsorship via EB-2 or EB-3, Oakland University must run a PERM labor market test before filing with DOL. That process takes months. Confirming the department's willingness and timeline upfront prevents surprises after you've already accepted the role.

Find Teaching at Oakland University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Oakland University sponsor H-1B visas for Teachings?
Yes, Oakland University sponsors H-1B visas for Teaching roles that qualify as specialty occupations, which typically requires a position-specific bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field. The university's HR and international faculty support offices coordinate the Labor Condition Application with DOL and the I-129 petition with USCIS. Faculty and instructional roles in specialized academic disciplines are the most common pathway.
How do I apply for Teaching jobs at Oakland University?
Teaching positions at Oakland University are posted on the university's official careers portal, where you can filter by department or job category. You can also browse sponsorship-eligible openings on Migrate Mate, which surfaces roles where Oakland University has a track record of sponsoring international candidates. Applications typically require a curriculum vitae, cover letter, teaching philosophy statement, and references.
Which visa types are commonly used for Teaching roles at Oakland University?
Oakland University commonly sponsors H-1B visas for full-time Teaching positions and TN visas for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying academic roles. F-1 students may work in Teaching capacities under OPT or CPT before transitioning to a longer-term petition. For permanent residency, the university can sponsor eligible faculty through the EB-2 or EB-3 preference categories via PERM labor certification.
What qualifications does Oakland University expect for Teaching roles?
Expectations vary by department, but most Teaching roles at Oakland University require at minimum a master's degree in the relevant discipline, with a terminal degree such as a Ph.D. strongly preferred for tenure-track or full-time lecturer positions. Relevant teaching experience, a demonstrable research or practice background, and subject-matter specialization are weighted heavily during faculty searches.
How do I plan around sponsorship timelines for Teaching positions?
H-1B cap-subject petitions have a fixed April 1 filing window with an October 1 start date, so offers for cap-subject Teaching roles need to be finalized months in advance. TN status can be obtained at the port of entry with less lead time. For PERM-based Green Card sponsorship, plan for a DOL processing period that can extend beyond a year before the immigrant petition stage begins.
