Target faculty and research roles first
Oakland University's sponsorship activity is concentrated in academic and research positions. Focus your search on faculty openings, postdoctoral appointments, and research staff roles, where visa sponsorship is most consistently offered and expected by hiring departments.
Understand the university's H-1B process
As a public university, Oakland University works through its HR and international scholar office to file H-1B petitions. Reach out to those offices early to understand internal timelines, since university processes often run longer than private-sector employers.
Highlight your degree field clearly in applications
Oakland University sponsors specialty occupation roles where your degree must directly relate to the position. Make sure your resume and cover letter explicitly connect your academic background to the role's requirements to support a clean H-1B eligibility assessment.
Ask about Green Card support during negotiations
Oakland University has a track record of supporting permanent residence through EB-2 and EB-3 pathways. Faculty candidates in particular should ask during the offer stage whether the university initiates PERM or national interest waiver sponsorship for the role.
Use Migrate Mate to confirm sponsorship before applying
Not every university role comes with visa sponsorship, even at active sponsors. Migrate Mate surfaces verified sponsors so you can filter by real sponsorship history and focus only on Oakland University roles with a confirmed track record of supporting international hires.
Plan around the academic hiring calendar
Higher education hiring follows a predictable cycle, with most faculty searches posting in the fall for positions starting the following academic year. Aligning your job search and visa timeline to this cycle improves your chances of a smooth H-1B or TN filing process.

Find Oakland University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Oakland University sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, Oakland University sponsors H-1B visas, primarily for faculty, researchers, and professional staff in specialty occupations. As a public university with an established international scholar office, it handles H-1B petitions regularly. Sponsorship is most common in academic departments and research units where a direct connection between the role and a specialized degree field can be demonstrated.
Which visa types does Oakland University sponsor?
Oakland University sponsors H-1B visas for specialty occupation workers, EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards for eligible faculty and staff, and supports F-1 OPT and CPT for students enrolled in its own programs. TN visa sponsorship is also available for qualifying Canadian and Mexican nationals in professional roles that meet USMCA occupation requirements.
Which departments or roles at Oakland University are most likely to offer visa sponsorship?
Sponsorship is most concentrated in faculty positions across science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and health sciences departments, as well as research staff and postdoctoral roles. Administrative and professional staff positions in areas like IT, finance, and student affairs occasionally include sponsorship, but academic and research hiring accounts for the majority of Oakland University's visa filings.
How do I find open jobs at Oakland University that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the most efficient way to identify Oakland University roles with confirmed visa sponsorship history. You can filter specifically for verified sponsors in the education sector, which removes the guesswork of contacting employers who may not sponsor. From there, apply directly through Oakland University's official careers portal and reference your visa status early in the process.
How do I time my application to align with Oakland University's sponsorship process?
University hiring in higher education runs on an academic calendar, with faculty searches typically opening in September through November for positions starting the following fall. For H-1B sponsorship, this timing aligns with the April 1 cap-season filing window. If you're on OPT, confirm your expiration date against the university's expected offer and filing timeline before accepting a position.
