Align Your Credentials to NC State's Academic Standards
NC State evaluates education candidates against U.S. academic equivalency standards. If your degree is from outside the U.S., get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved service before applying. Many international candidates lose consideration because this step is missing from their application.
Target Roles Tied to Funded Research Units
NC State's colleges with active federal or grant-backed research programs, like engineering, agriculture, and life sciences, are more likely to sponsor visas for education-adjacent roles. These units have dedicated HR processes and are experienced navigating H-1B and J-1 paperwork alongside hiring.
Browse Open Education Roles on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters NC State education jobs by visa type, so you can see which roles have active sponsorship history. This saves time compared to applying broadly and then discovering sponsorship isn't available for a specific position or department.
Understand the J-1 Two-Year Home Residency Rule
If you've held a J-1 visa funded by a government program or in a field on the Skills List, a two-year home residency requirement may apply before you can switch to H-1B. NC State's HR team can help identify this early, but you should flag it upfront during negotiations.
Time Your Application Around USCIS's H-1B Cap Cycle
H-1B cap-subject petitions must be filed in April for an October 1 start date. If you're transitioning from F-1 OPT or finishing a program, plan your NC State application timeline so an offer can be secured before the March registration window opens.

Find Education at North Carolina State University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does North Carolina State University sponsor H-1B visas for Education roles?
Yes, NC State sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying education roles where the position meets the USCIS specialty occupation standard, meaning a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field is normally required for the job. Faculty, research, and some professional staff roles in education commonly meet this threshold. Sponsorship is handled through NC State's Office of International Affairs in coordination with the hiring department.
How do I apply for Education jobs at North Carolina State University?
Education roles at NC State are posted through the university's HR system. You can also find open positions filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility on Migrate Mate, which lets you identify NC State education roles where international candidates have historically been considered. In your application, make sure your cover letter addresses how your qualifications align with the department's academic or research priorities, since hiring committees in higher education weigh fit with the unit's mission heavily.
Which visa types does NC State commonly use for Education positions?
NC State uses several visa categories for education roles depending on the position type and candidate background. H-1B is common for specialty occupation roles like faculty and academic professionals. J-1 is frequently used for visiting scholars, postdoctoral researchers, and exchange-based teaching roles. TN and E-3 are available for Canadian and Australian nationals respectively in qualifying roles. F-1 OPT and CPT can cover students and recent graduates during transitional employment periods.
What qualifications does NC State typically expect for Education roles?
Expectations vary by role, but faculty and research-oriented education positions at NC State generally require a terminal degree in the relevant field, such as a Ph.D. or Ed.D., along with a record of teaching or scholarship. Instructional and academic support roles may require a master's degree plus relevant experience. For international candidates, USCIS requires that the offered position qualifies as a specialty occupation, so the degree requirement must be tied directly to the duties of the role, not just preferred.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for an NC State Education hire?
For H-1B sponsorship, the process involves NC State preparing a Labor Condition Application with the DOL, which typically takes one to two weeks once certified, followed by the USCIS petition, which can take two to six months under standard processing or two to three weeks with premium processing. J-1 sponsorship through NC State is generally faster. Plan for at least three to four months from offer acceptance to authorized start date for H-1B roles, and build that into your negotiation timeline.
