Translate your credentials for U.S. academic standards
Columbia hiring committees expect transcripts and degrees formatted for U.S. review. If your credentials are from outside the U.S., get them evaluated by a NACES-accredited service before applying to education roles requiring specific degree equivalency.
Target roles within Columbia's academic departments directly
Columbia posts education positions through its central careers portal and individual school sites. Faculty-adjacent and academic support roles often have separate hiring cycles from administrative ones, so check both the Teachers College and SEAS listings independently.
Confirm the role is LCA-eligible before your interview
Columbia's Office of International Students and Scholars handles H-1B filings, but the role must qualify as a specialty occupation under DOL standards. Education titles like academic advisor or program coordinator sometimes get scrutinized, so clarify the job's degree requirement with HR early.
Account for the H-1B cap lottery in your timeline
If you're not already in H-1B status, Columbia can only file a cap-subject petition after the USCIS lottery selects your registration in April. That means employment can't start before October 1, so negotiate your start date accordingly during the offer stage.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open education roles by visa type
Columbia's education job listings span multiple sponsorship categories. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for Columbia positions that align with your visa status, whether that's F-1 OPT, H-1B, or E-3, so you're only reviewing roles where sponsorship is confirmed.
Prepare OPT STEM extension documentation if you're on F-1
Education roles in instructional technology, data analysis for academic programs, or educational research may qualify for a 24-month STEM OPT extension. Confirm with Columbia's international office whether the SOC code on your offer letter supports the extension before signing.

Find Education at Columbia University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Columbia University sponsor H-1B visas for Education roles?
Yes, Columbia University sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying education positions through its Office of International Students and Scholars. The role must meet USCIS specialty occupation criteria, meaning a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field is a standard requirement. Faculty, research, and certain academic support roles typically meet this threshold, while general administrative education titles may require additional documentation to qualify.
How do I apply for Education jobs at Columbia University?
Applications go through Columbia's central careers portal at careers.columbia.edu, though individual schools like Teachers College and Columbia Business School post separately on their own sites. Create a profile, submit your CV and cover letter tailored to the academic environment, and flag your visa sponsorship needs early. Some departments also conduct targeted outreach at higher education conferences, so monitoring those channels alongside the portal is useful.
Which visa types does Columbia University commonly use for Education positions?
Columbia sponsors H-1B visas for specialty occupation education roles and supports F-1 OPT and CPT for students transitioning into staff or research positions. The E-3 visa is available for Australian nationals in qualifying roles. For senior faculty or researchers with advanced credentials, Columbia can also support EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card sponsorship. TN status is an option for Canadian and Mexican nationals in eligible education occupations.
What qualifications does Columbia University expect for Education roles?
Requirements vary by role type. Faculty and research positions typically require a terminal degree such as a Ph.D. or Ed.D. in a relevant discipline. Academic advising and student affairs roles often require a master's degree in education, counseling, or a related field. For roles involving instructional design or educational technology, demonstrated experience with specific platforms or pedagogical frameworks often carries as much weight as formal credentials.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Columbia education role?
Timeline depends on visa category. H-1B cap-subject filings follow USCIS's April lottery cycle, with employment starting no earlier than October 1. Cap-exempt H-1B filings, which apply to certain Columbia research and teaching positions, can be processed year-round and often take two to four months. F-1 OPT authorization through USCIS typically takes three to five months, so coordinating with Columbia's international office well before your intended start date is essential. Browse open roles on Migrate Mate to identify positions where sponsorship aligns with your current status.
