Get Your Teaching Credentials Verified Early
California requires state-issued teaching credentials for most classroom roles. Start the Commission on Teacher Credentialing application before you apply, because SFUSD's HR team will confirm credential status before moving forward with sponsorship paperwork.
Target Hard-to-Fill Subject Areas
SFUSD consistently struggles to fill special education, bilingual, and STEM teaching roles. Applications for these positions move faster through the hiring pipeline, which matters when you're working against OPT expiration or a visa status deadline.
Ask HR Directly About Sponsorship Timing
District HR teams process sponsorship differently than private employers. Ask whether they initiate the H-1B petition before or after the school year starts, since USCIS cap-subject petitions must be filed by April 1 for an October 1 start date.
Use Migrate Mate to Find Open Roles
Education roles at large public school districts open and close quickly, especially mid-year. Browse SFUSD's current job listings on Migrate Mate to filter for positions that align with your visa type and field, so you're not applying to roles that won't support sponsorship.
Align Your Degree Field With the Role Closely
For H-1B eligibility, DOL requires that your bachelor's degree field directly corresponds to the specialty occupation. An education or subject-specific degree in the field you'll teach strengthens the LCA filing and reduces the risk of a USCIS request for evidence.
Secure an Offer Before the School Year Deadline
SFUSD typically completes most hiring between March and July for the following school year. If you need H-1B sponsorship, receiving an offer by early spring gives the district enough runway to file before the April 1 cap-subject petition window closes.

Find Education at San Francisco Unified School District JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does San Francisco Unified School District sponsor H-1B visas for Educations?
Yes, San Francisco Unified School District does sponsor H-1B visas for Education roles, particularly for specialty occupation positions like credentialed teachers, special education staff, and school counselors. Sponsorship is not automatic for every role, so it's best to confirm directly with SFUSD's HR department during the interview process that the specific position qualifies and that the district is prepared to file the petition.
How do I apply for Education jobs at San Francisco Unified School District?
Applications go through SFUSD's official recruitment portal, where postings are listed by school site, subject area, and role type. You'll need to submit a resume, cover letter, and any applicable teaching credential documentation. If you're on OPT or need visa sponsorship, noting your work authorization status early in the process helps HR assess the sponsorship pathway before an offer is extended.
Which visa types are commonly used for Education roles at San Francisco Unified School District?
H-1B is the most common work visa for credentialed teaching and specialist roles at SFUSD because those positions typically qualify as specialty occupations requiring a degree in a specific field. F-1 OPT and CPT are options for recent graduates in education-related fields completing practical training, and TN status is available to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying education roles under USMCA.
What qualifications does San Francisco Unified School District expect for Education roles?
For classroom teaching positions, SFUSD requires a valid California teaching credential issued by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing, along with a bachelor's degree in the relevant subject area. Special education, counseling, and administrative roles may require additional certifications or a master's degree. Bilingual proficiency, particularly in Spanish or Cantonese, is a strong advantage for many positions given the district's student demographics.
How do I find Education jobs at San Francisco Unified School District that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the recommended way to browse current Education openings at SFUSD filtered by visa sponsorship type. Because district postings open and close throughout the hiring season, checking regularly and applying early, especially for hard-to-fill roles in special education or STEM, gives you the best chance of securing an offer with enough time for sponsorship processing before the school year begins.
