Get Your Foreign Teaching Credentials Evaluated Early
Maryland requires a state teaching license, and AACPS will need proof your foreign degree meets U.S. equivalency standards. Request a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved agency before you apply so delays don't stall your offer letter.
Target Hard-to-Fill Subject Areas First
AACPS, like most large public districts, struggles to fill special education, bilingual, and STEM teaching positions. Focusing your application on these shortage areas significantly improves your odds of receiving an offer that includes H-1B or J-1 sponsorship.
Understand How Public Schools Use J-1 Visas
Many public school districts, including AACPS, sponsor international teachers through J-1 exchange visitor programs rather than H-1B. Confirm with the HR team which visa pathway applies to your role before accepting an offer, as J-1 carries a two-year home residency requirement.
Ask HR About the LCA Filing Timeline
For H-1B sponsorship, AACPS must file a Labor Condition Application with the DOL before USCIS can process your petition. School district HR departments often work on academic-year hiring cycles, so confirm the filing timeline aligns with your start date and any OPT expiration.
Use Migrate Mate to Browse Open Education Roles
Filtering by visa type and employer is critical when targeting a specific district. Use Migrate Mate to find current Education openings at AACPS that are open to sponsored candidates, so you're not applying blind to roles that won't support your visa status.
Align Your Application With the District's Hiring Calendar
AACPS runs the bulk of its teacher hiring between February and May for fall school year starts. Submitting applications outside this window reduces your visibility. Timing your outreach to match the district's recruitment cycle improves your chances of reaching a hiring manager before sponsorship slots are committed.

Find Education at Anne Arundel County Public Schools JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Anne Arundel County Public Schools sponsor H-1B visas for Education roles?
Yes, AACPS has sponsored H-1B visas for Education positions, particularly for teachers and specialists in shortage subject areas. As a public school district, AACPS qualifies as a cap-exempt H-1B employer, which means petitions can be filed at any time of year without being subject to the annual 85,000-cap lottery. This is a meaningful advantage for international educators who missed the general H-1B registration window.
How do I apply for Education jobs at Anne Arundel County Public Schools?
Applications for Education roles at AACPS are submitted through the district's official careers portal. You'll need to create a profile, upload a resume, and attach relevant credentials including your teaching license or a foreign credential evaluation if your degree is from outside the United States. The district's main hiring season runs from late winter through spring for positions starting in the fall academic year. You can also browse current openings on Migrate Mate, filtered specifically for visa-sponsored Education roles at AACPS.
Which visa types are commonly used for Education roles at Anne Arundel County Public Schools?
AACPS sponsors both H-1B and J-1 visas for Education positions. H-1B is common for roles requiring a specialty degree such as school psychologists, speech-language pathologists, and STEM teachers. J-1 is frequently used for classroom teachers placed through cultural exchange programs. F-1 OPT and CPT can apply for student teachers or recent graduates completing practicums, and TN visas are available for eligible Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying Education roles.
What qualifications does AACPS expect for sponsored Education positions?
Most sponsored Education roles at AACPS require at minimum a bachelor's degree in education or a subject-specific field, plus eligibility for Maryland state teacher licensure. For specialty roles such as special education or speech-language pathology, a master's degree is standard. Foreign degrees must be evaluated by a NACES-approved credential evaluation service to confirm U.S. equivalency before AACPS can initiate any visa petition.
How long does the sponsorship and hiring process take at AACPS?
The timeline depends on your visa type. For H-1B, AACPS must first file a Labor Condition Application with the DOL, which typically takes seven business days, before submitting the I-129 petition to USCIS. Standard USCIS processing runs three to five months; premium processing can reduce that to 15 business days. For J-1, processing through a designated sponsor organization generally takes four to eight weeks. Budget extra lead time if your Maryland teaching license application is still pending.
