Essential Duties

As the Assistant Superintendent, you will:
- Lead Early Education and Elementary schools SFUSD mission in partnership with, realizing the vision of the Graduate Profile through instructional coherence and anti-racist leadership moves.
- Supervise a cohort of Executive Directors to actively support the leadership development for early education and elementary school leaders.
- Provide visible district level leadership, support and guidance across all departments in service of the Board Adopted Vision, Values, Goals and Guardrails.
- Champion and model anti-racist leadership rooted in equity, the belief that all students can learn, and the understanding that we must interrupt inequities to ensure that each and every student receives the quality instruction and equitable support required to thrive in the 21st century.
- Provide visible district leadership across early education and elementary schools.
- Partner with city agencies and community organizations to strengthen birth-to-third grade systems and access to high-quality early learning.
- Support implementation of Universal PreKindergarten (UPK) and PK–3 alignment initiatives.
- Collaborate with Executive Directors and centralized district departments to develop, implement, regularly evaluate, improve, and redesign instructional programs toward increasing student achievement at under-performing schools and closing the achievement and equity gap at all schools.
- Build a learning, equity, and performance-focused Early Education and Elementary LEAD team of Executive Directors that regularly engages in authentic collaborative learning to improve their own leadership capacity and success.
- Ensure alignment and coherence of curriculum, assessment, and instructional practices across PreK–5, grounded in developmentally appropriate and culturally responsive practices.
- Use data systems and multiple measures to monitor progress, inform decision-making, and refine strategies to improve outcomes, particularly for historically underserved students.
- Lead the development of a high-performing LEAD team that engages in continuous improvement, shared learning, and accountability for results.
- Drive implementation of PK–5 alignment strategies that strengthen early literacy, math, and social-emotional development.
- Work collaboratively with Executive Directors to ensure that school leaders have strong talent strategies in place designed to help recruit, develop and retain high quality, diverse staff that positively impact student outcomes.
- Strategically build a strong, cohesive, and collaborative team among Executive Directors and others on the Elementary Team to ensure shared decision-making, commitment, and implementation of priorities and to model healthy and productive adult culture.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive, equity-driven talent strategy, including supervision, evaluation, and ongoing development of Executive Directors and direct reports.
- Partner with Executive Directors to ensure school leaders recruit, develop, and retain high-quality, diverse staff aligned to improved student outcomes.
- Build strong instructional leadership systems, including coaching, professional learning, and leadership development structures that support continuous growth.
- Foster a cohesive and collaborative leadership culture grounded in shared accountability, clear priorities, and effective decision-making.
- Model and cultivate a healthy adult learning environment that reflects trust, inclusion, and high expectations across teams.
- Collaborate with the Assistant Superintendent team (LEAD) and other district leaders to monitor and coordinate district level themes from differentiated school support plans.
- Collaborate across the LEAD team and district departments to ensure coherence in school support, alignment of differentiated support plans, and implementation of district priorities.
- Navigate and partner with central offices to resolve complex school site issues, including student discipline, personnel, budget, curriculum, and operations.
- Engage families, community partners, and early learning stakeholders to elevate student and family voice in decision-making and strengthen trust across communities.
- Build and maintain strong cross-sector partnerships with city agencies and community-based organizations to support early learning systems and PK–5 alignment.
- Represent the district in public and professional settings, effectively communicating priorities, progress, and challenges to diverse audiences.
The strongest candidates will have:
- Three (3) years of senior-level administrative experience in an academic and early childhood setting, preferably in a public, urban school district central office department.
- Three (3) years of professional experience leading PK–5 initiatives, including demonstrated expertise in elementary education and facilitating school and organizational change.
- Knowledge of San Francisco’s public schools/urban public schools and a passionate belief in SFUSD’s commitment to instructional leadership as a lever toward delivering on the SFUSD Graduate Profile.
- A demonstrated capacity to interrupt systemic barriers to equity and to model equity-centered leadership.
- Well-developed cultural humility, awareness of their own identity, and understanding of internalized, interpersonal, and systemic racism and other forms of oppression.
- A strong record of managing organizational change and initiating key innovations.
- Strong analytic and systems thinking necessary to interpret data to inform goals and strategy, as well as build infrastructure where none exists.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build effective working relationships with senior level district staff and colleagues.
- Experience and success with effective written and verbal communication, facilitation and presentations to large groups and a variety of audiences (e.g., staff meetings, executive briefings, public board meetings, memos).
- Ability to work effectively in difficult situations that involve confidential and sensitive matters.

- Valid California Administrative Credential
- Five (5) years of experience as a central office and/or site administrator
