Get your credentials evaluated before applying
California requires teachers to hold a valid state credential, and international degrees must be evaluated by a NACES-approved agency. Start this process early since evaluations can take several weeks and SFUSD will want proof before advancing your application.
Target hard-to-fill subject areas at SFUSD
SFUSD consistently struggles to fill Instructor roles in special education, bilingual programs, and STEM subjects. Focusing your applications on these shortage areas increases the likelihood the district will pursue sponsorship to secure your hire over a less qualified local candidate.
Understand how the H-1B fits teaching roles
To qualify for H-1B sponsorship as an Instructor, your role must meet the specialty occupation standard, which means a bachelor's degree in a specific field tied directly to the subject you teach. A general education degree without subject-matter specialization can create complications at USCIS.
Clarify sponsorship intent before your final interview
SFUSD's HR process moves through principal-level interviews before district HR engagement. Raise sponsorship requirements after you have a verbal offer of support from the school principal, so the conversation reaches the HR team with internal backing already in place.
Use Migrate Mate to find open Instructor roles
Instructor openings at SFUSD that come with confirmed visa sponsorship are filterable by visa type on Migrate Mate, so you can focus your search on postings where sponsorship is already part of the hiring plan rather than negotiating it from scratch.

Find Instructor at San Francisco Unified School District JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does San Francisco Unified School District sponsor H-1B visas for Instructors?
Yes, San Francisco Unified School District sponsors H-1B visas for Instructor roles where the position meets the specialty occupation standard. The role must require a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific academic field directly related to the subject being taught. SFUSD's HR department manages the petition process, so confirming sponsorship intent early in the hiring process is important.
How do I apply for Instructor jobs at San Francisco Unified School District?
Applications go through SFUSD's official recruitment portal, where openings are posted by school site and subject area. You'll need to upload your resume, teaching credential or credential eligibility documentation, and references. For international applicants, Migrate Mate lists SFUSD Instructor roles filtered by visa sponsorship availability, which helps you identify the right postings before applying directly.
Which visa types does San Francisco Unified School District use for Instructor roles?
SFUSD works with H-1B, TN, F-1 OPT, and F-1 CPT for Instructor positions. H-1B is the most common path for full-time permanent hires. TN is available to Canadian and Mexican nationals teaching in qualifying specialty occupations. F-1 OPT and CPT are used for student teachers and interns during their authorized work periods.
What qualifications does San Francisco Unified School District expect for Instructor roles?
SFUSD requires a valid California teaching credential or proof of eligibility for most Instructor positions. Subject-matter competency is assessed through either the California Subject Examinations for Teachers or an approved waiver. Bilingual certifications and experience working with English language learners are valued, particularly for roles in SFUSD's dual-language and newcomer programs.
How do I time my visa sponsorship process when joining SFUSD as an Instructor?
SFUSD follows a school-year hiring calendar, with most Instructor offers finalized between April and July for a fall start. H-1B petitions must be filed by April 1 for an October 1 start under the cap, so timing your offer before that window is critical. If you're on OPT, confirm your end date against the school calendar and discuss H-1B filing timelines with HR as soon as you have an offer.
