Millions of people around the world come to our platform to find creative ideas, dream about new possibilities and plan for memories that will last a lifetime. At Pinterest, we’re on a mission to bring everyone the inspiration to create a life they love, and that starts with the people behind the product.
Discover a career where you ignite innovation for millions, transform passion into growth opportunities, celebrate each other’s unique experiences and embrace the flexibility to do your best work. Creating a career you love? It’s Possible.
At Pinterest, AI isn't just a feature, it's a powerful partner that augments our creativity and amplifies our impact, and we’re looking for candidates who are excited to be a part of that. To get a complete picture of your experience and abilities, we’ll explore your foundational skills and how you collaborate with AI.
Through our interview process, what matters most is that you can always explain your approach, showing us not just what you know, but how you think. You can read more about our AI interview philosophy and how we use AI in our recruiting process here.
Within Pinterest, the Pinterest Labs organization focuses on applied ML research and development. Labs focuses on a broad variety of AI/ML initiatives, such as core computer vision, multimodal representation learning, heterogeneous graph neural networks, generative modeling, recommender systems, etc. This is the group that develops foundation ML models that fully leverage the tens of billions of Pins and the associated knowledge graph to improve the core product.
We are currently hiring for the visual modeling team in Labs, which focuses on developing Pinterest Canvas. Canvas is a foundation text-to-image model developed internally for helping various visualization, inpainting, and outpainting products. In this role, you’ll get to work with Pinterest’s rich visual-text dataset to build large-scale generative models which are continuously being shipped to production to power visualization features. The core Canvas pod is a small group (~6 engineers along with a product prototyping team) inside of Labs, allowing for deep collaboration. For example, engineers working on the Canvas project also participate in the development of our core multimodal text & image embeddings, as these are in turn used to condition the model in unique ways.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prototype new model architectures for Pinterest Canvas, our internal text-to-image generative model. We’re looking for hands-on experience working with diffusion text-to-image models and independent model implementation skills.
- Read research papers, participate in group discussions, and help brainstorm our overall visual generative strategy at the company.
- Help with collection of relevant visual training data for Pinterest Canvas, particularly to conduct RLHF, targeted fine-tuning, etc.
- Publish and publicize your work via conferences, paper submissions, blog posts, etc.
- Mentor more junior researchers or research interns within the Pinterest Labs organization.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Research engineers and scientists who have experience working with generative computer vision models, preferably various forms of diffusion models.
- 5+ years of industry computer vision experience.
- M.S. or PhD in Machine Learning, Computer Science, or related areas.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Publications at top ML conferences.
- Experience using Cursor, Copilot, Codex, or similar AI coding assistants for development, debugging, testing, and refactoring.
- Familiarity with LLM-powered productivity tools for documentation search, experiment analysis, SQL/data exploration, and engineering workflow acceleration.
In-Office Requirement Statement
- We let the type of work you do guide the collaboration style. That means we're not always working in an office, but we continue to gather for key moments of collaboration and connection.
- This role will need to be in the office for in-person collaboration 1-2 times/quarter and therefore can be situated anywhere in the country.
Relocation Statement
- This position is not eligible for relocation assistance. Visit our PinFlex page to learn more about our working model.
COMPENSATION
- $161,263—$332,012 USD

Align your portfolio to Pinterest's ML stack
Pinterest's ML roles center on recommendation systems, computer vision, and large-scale content ranking. Showcase projects using PyTorch or TensorFlow with production-scale datasets. Generic ML portfolios get screened out early in favor of candidates with demonstrable relevance.
Target roles explicitly listing sponsorship eligibility
Pinterest posts distinguish between roles open to sponsorship and those requiring existing authorization. Filter job listings for sponsorship-eligible positions before applying. Applying to roles with no sponsorship pathway wastes your 60-day OPT grace period if you're between positions.
Request premium processing before your OPT expires
USCIS premium processing reduces H-1B adjudication to 15 business days. If your OPT end date is approaching, coordinate with Pinterest's recruiting team early so the I-129 petition can be filed and upgraded before your authorized work period lapses.
Prepare a specialized skills brief for your recruiter
Pinterest's immigration team files Labor Condition Applications with DOL specifying a specialty occupation. Providing your recruiter a one-page summary of your ML specialization and directly relevant degree field helps them classify your role accurately and avoid LCA complications downstream.
Map your visa type to Pinterest's green card timeline
Pinterest sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 green card categories for ML roles. If your undergraduate degree is in a field adjacent to ML, confirm with your immigration attorney whether EB-2 or EB-3 aligns better before your H-1B is filed, since changing categories later adds delay.
Find open ML roles at Pinterest through Migrate Mate
Identifying which Pinterest ML postings are actively accepting sponsored candidates is the first practical step. Use Migrate Mate to filter Pinterest's open Machine Learning roles by visa type, so you're applying to positions where sponsorship is confirmed, not assumed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Pinterest sponsor H-1B visas for Machine Learning roles?
Yes, Pinterest sponsors H-1B visas for Machine Learning positions. Pinterest participates in the annual H-1B lottery, and ML engineers and researchers are among the roles supported. If you're on F-1 OPT, Pinterest can bridge your status through the cap-gap period while your H-1B visa petition is pending, provided it's filed before your OPT expires.
How do I apply for Machine Learning jobs at Pinterest?
Apply through Pinterest's careers portal or browse sponsorship-confirmed ML openings on Migrate Mate, which filters for roles where Pinterest has an active sponsorship track record. Tailor your application to Pinterest's focus areas, including recommendation systems and visual understanding, and be upfront about your work authorization status during the initial recruiter screen.
Which visa types does Pinterest commonly use for Machine Learning roles?
Pinterest sponsors H-1B, E-3 visa, TN visa, and F-1 OPT for ML roles at the nonimmigrant level. For permanent residence, Pinterest files PERM-based EB-2 and EB-3 petitions. Australian citizens are often sponsored on E-3 visas, which skip the H-1B lottery entirely. Canadian and Mexican nationals may qualify for TN visa status depending on their specific role classification.
What qualifications does Pinterest expect for Machine Learning positions?
Most Pinterest ML roles require a graduate degree in Computer Science, Statistics, or a closely related field, though exceptional candidates with a bachelor's degree and substantial production ML experience are sometimes considered. Pinterest's ML teams expect hands-on experience with large-scale distributed training, ranking systems, or computer vision, not just academic familiarity with frameworks.
How do I time my application around Pinterest's H-1B sponsorship process?
USCIS opens H-1B registrations in March each year, with the lottery drawn shortly after. Pinterest typically initiates sponsorship paperwork in the first quarter to meet that window. If you're targeting a start date aligned with the October 1 cap year, aim to have an offer finalized by February so there's sufficient time for DOL LCA certification before registration opens.
