Discover a career where you ignite innovation for millions, transform passion into growth opportunities, celebrate each other’s unique experiences and embrace the flexibility to do your best work. Creating a career you love? It’s Possible.
At Pinterest, AI isn't just a feature, it's a powerful partner that augments our creativity and amplifies our impact, and we’re looking for candidates who are excited to be a part of that. To get a complete picture of your experience and abilities, we’ll explore your foundational skills and how you collaborate with AI.
Through our interview process, what matters most is that you can always explain your approach, showing us not just what you know, but how you think. You can read more about our AI interview philosophy and how we use AI in our recruiting process here.
Within Pinterest, the Pinterest Labs organization focuses on applied ML research and development. Labs focuses on a broad variety of AI/ML initiatives, such as core computer vision, multimodal representation learning, heterogeneous graph neural networks, generative modeling, recommender systems, etc. This is the group that develops foundation ML models that fully leverage the tens of billions of Pins and the associated knowledge graph to improve the core product.
We are currently hiring for the visual modeling team in Labs, which focuses on developing Pinterest Canvas. Canvas is a foundation text-to-image model developed internally for helping various visualization, inpainting, and outpainting products. In this role, you’ll get to work with Pinterest’s rich visual-text dataset to build large-scale generative models which are continuously being shipped to production to power visualization features. The core Canvas pod is a small group (~6 engineers along with a product prototyping team) inside of Labs, allowing for deep collaboration. For example, engineers working on the Canvas project also participate in the development of our core multimodal text & image embeddings, as these are in turn used to condition the model in unique ways.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prototype new model architectures for Pinterest Canvas, our internal text-to-image generative model. We’re looking for hands-on experience working with diffusion text-to-image models and independent model implementation skills.
- Read research papers, participate in group discussions, and help brainstorm our overall visual generative strategy at the company.
- Help with collection of relevant visual training data for Pinterest Canvas, particularly to conduct RLHF, targeted fine-tuning, etc.
- Publish and publicize your work via conferences, paper submissions, blog posts, etc.
- Mentor more junior researchers or research interns within the Pinterest Labs organization.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Research engineers and scientists who have experience working with generative computer vision models, preferably various forms of diffusion models.
- 5+ years of industry computer vision experience.
- M.S. or PhD in Machine Learning, Computer Science, or related areas.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Publications at top ML conferences.
- Experience using Cursor, Copilot, Codex, or similar AI coding assistants for development, debugging, testing, and refactoring.
- Familiarity with LLM-powered productivity tools for documentation search, experiment analysis, SQL/data exploration, and engineering workflow acceleration.
In-Office Requirement Statement
- We let the type of work you do guide the collaboration style. That means we're not always working in an office, but we continue to gather for key moments of collaboration and connection.
- This role will need to be in the office for in-person collaboration 1-2 times/quarter and therefore can be situated anywhere in the country.
Relocation Statement
- This position is not eligible for relocation assistance. Visit our PinFlex page to learn more about our working model.
COMPENSATION
- $161,263—$332,012 USD

Tailor your portfolio to Pinterest's ML stack
Pinterest's ML teams work heavily on embedding models, real-time ranking, and multimodal systems. Showcasing projects in these areas signals direct fit and makes it easier for hiring managers to justify sponsorship investment in your candidacy.
Confirm sponsorship eligibility before final rounds
Ask the recruiter during the initial screen whether the specific ML role is approved for H-1B or E-3 sponsorship. Some teams have headcount-tied sponsorship budgets, and confirming early avoids surprises after a strong technical interview performance.
Time your application around H-1B cap deadlines
USCIS opens H-1B registration in March for an October 1 start date. If you're on F-1 OPT, map your OPT expiration against this window so Pinterest's HR team can align your offer letter and petition filing accordingly.
Leverage E-3 status if you hold Australian citizenship
The E-3 visa has a separate annual allocation and no lottery, so Australian nationals in ML roles can often start sooner than H-1B holders. Raise this with Pinterest's immigration counsel once you have an offer in hand.
Build a case for EB-2 NIW alongside employer sponsorship
ML engineers with published research, patents, or measurable industry contributions can self-petition under EB-2 NIW through USCIS, independent of employer-sponsored PERM. Running both tracks in parallel reduces dependency on a single green card timeline.
Find Pinterest ML openings filtered by sponsorship on Migrate Mate
Search Migrate Mate to filter Machine Learning Engineer roles at Pinterest by the visa types they sponsor. This lets you target active listings that align with your specific status before investing time in applications or recruiter outreach.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Pinterest sponsor H-1B visas for Machine Learning Engineers?
Yes, Pinterest sponsors H-1B visas for Machine Learning Engineers. The company works with immigration counsel to file H-1B petitions for qualifying roles, and ML engineering positions are among the functions where sponsorship is regularly supported. If you're in the selection process, confirm sponsorship availability for the specific team and role level with the recruiter early.
Which visa types are commonly used for Machine Learning Engineer roles at Pinterest?
Machine Learning Engineers at Pinterest are commonly sponsored under H-1B and E-3 visas for initial employment authorization. F-1 OPT and STEM OPT extensions are also used by recent graduates during the period before H-1B sponsorship begins. For long-term residency, Pinterest supports employer-sponsored green card pathways including EB-2 and EB-3 through the PERM labor certification process.
What qualifications or experience are expected for Machine Learning Engineer roles at Pinterest?
Pinterest's ML engineer roles typically require a bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, statistics, or a related quantitative field. Hands-on experience with large-scale recommendation systems, ranking models, or deep learning frameworks is expected. For senior roles, a track record of shipping production ML systems and familiarity with distributed training pipelines strengthens a sponsorship case significantly.
How do I apply for Machine Learning Engineer jobs at Pinterest?
You can browse and apply for Machine Learning Engineer roles at Pinterest directly through Migrate Mate, which filters listings by visa sponsorship type so you can confirm the role fits your immigration status before applying. Applications typically move through a recruiter screen, a technical phone interview, and a virtual onsite covering ML system design, coding, and behavioral rounds.
How do I time my Pinterest ML job search around visa filing deadlines?
If you need H-1B sponsorship, USCIS opens registration in early March for an October 1 fiscal year start. Targeting a Pinterest offer by late January or early February gives the legal team enough runway to prepare the petition. If you're on STEM OPT, verify your expiration date against this calendar so your authorization doesn't lapse between OPT and H-1B activation.
