Job Summary
The Oncology Triage Nurse provides comprehensive nursing care and clinical triage services for oncology patients in the outpatient setting. This role performs clinical procedures including central venous access device management, central line and port blood draws, and administration of prescribed injections.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- Associate Degree in Nursing required.
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Chemotherapy/Biotherapy certification preferred and required within 6 months of hire.
- Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience.
- Oncology nursing experience strongly preferred.
- Experience with central venous access devices, port access, blood collection, and medication administration preferred.
- Experience in ambulatory oncology, infusion services, or physician practice setting preferred.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Assess patient symptoms, treatment side effects, and urgent care needs.
- Escalate urgent findings to providers and facilitate timely intervention.
- Document assessments, interventions, and outcomes in the electronic medical record.
- Access implanted ports and central venous access devices using sterile technique.
- Obtain blood specimens from ports, central lines, and peripheral venipuncture.
- Maintain and flush ports and central lines according to policy.
- Administer prescribed injections including growth factors, hormonal therapies, immunotherapy, vitamins, and other oncology medications.
- Monitor patients for adverse reactions following injections and treatments.
- Collect and process laboratory specimens according to protocols.
- Collaborate with providers, pharmacists, infusion nurses, navigators, and healthcare team members.
- Review laboratory results and communicate findings to providers.
- Coordinate injection scheduling based on clinical status and provider orders.
- Provide patient education regarding medications, side effects, symptom management, infection prevention, and when to seek urgent care.
- Reinforce treatment plans and provider instructions.
