Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Nursing Jobs at University of Illinois Jobs
Get Your Credentials Evaluated Before Applying
Foreign nursing degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency before most academic health employers will advance your application. Use a NACES-approved credential evaluation service and confirm your evaluation covers both degree level and clinical hours.
Prioritize Roles Within University Health Services
University of Illinois hires nurses across campus health, hospital affiliates, and research settings. Roles tied to academic or research missions tend to have stronger sponsorship precedent, so target postings that list research, student health, or clinical education components.
Understand How PERM Affects Your Nursing Timeline
Permanent residency through EB-2 or EB-3 requires the university to complete PERM labor certification with DOL before filing your immigrant petition. For nursing, this process can take 12 to 24 months, so align your H-1B status timeline accordingly to avoid a gap.
Confirm NCLEX Licensure Before Your Offer Stage
University of Illinois requires active Illinois RN licensure before you can begin work. USCIS will not approve an H-1B petition for a nursing role without proof of state licensure, so pass the NCLEX and obtain your Illinois license before your employer files.
Search Nursing Openings Through Migrate Mate
University of Illinois posts nursing roles across multiple hiring systems, making it easy to miss sponsorship-eligible openings. Browse current vacancies filtered by visa type on Migrate Mate to identify which positions are open to international candidates right now.
Ask HR Specifically About Cap-Exempt H-1B Filing
As a higher education institution, University of Illinois qualifies as a cap-exempt H-1B employer. This means your petition can be filed at any time of year without entering the annual lottery, so you're not limited to the April filing window.

Find Nursing at University of Illinois JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of Illinois sponsor H-1B visas for Nursings?
Yes. University of Illinois sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying nursing roles. As a higher education institution, it is cap-exempt, meaning it can file H-1B petitions with USCIS at any point during the year rather than competing in the annual lottery. You'll need an active Illinois RN license before the petition can be filed.
How do I apply for Nursing jobs at University of Illinois?
Applications go through the University of Illinois Human Resources portal, where nursing positions are listed by campus and unit. You can also browse sponsorship-eligible nursing openings on Migrate Mate, which filters roles by visa type so you can identify positions open to international candidates before applying directly through the university system.
Which visa types does University of Illinois commonly use for Nursing roles?
The most common pathways for nursing roles are H-1B for temporary work authorization and EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card sponsorship for permanent residence. F-1 OPT is available for recent nursing graduates completing their post-graduation work authorization period. TN visa sponsorship is also possible for Canadian and Mexican nationals whose nursing role qualifies under USMCA.
What qualifications does University of Illinois expect for international nursing candidates?
You'll need a nursing degree evaluated for U.S. equivalency by a NACES-approved agency, an active Illinois RN license obtained by passing the NCLEX, and relevant clinical experience appropriate to the specific unit or specialty. Research-affiliated or clinical education roles may also expect experience in academic or teaching hospital environments alongside direct patient care credentials.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a nursing role at University of Illinois?
H-1B processing through USCIS typically takes three to six months with standard processing, or one to three weeks with premium processing. If the university also pursues permanent residency, PERM labor certification with DOL adds another 12 to 24 months before the immigrant petition is filed. Plan your Illinois RN licensure timeline to avoid delays at the offer stage.
