Align your credentials with UK's expectations
University administrative roles often require demonstrated experience with academic workflows like grant coordination, faculty scheduling, or student records. Tailor your resume to reflect these functions directly, since UK hiring managers screen for higher education familiarity, not just general office experience.
Target department-level postings strategically
UK posts Administrative Assistant openings across dozens of colleges and units, from the College of Medicine to UK Athletics. Departments with active research programs or large faculty rosters tend to have recurring openings and stronger institutional capacity to process sponsorship paperwork.
Understand which visa types fit this role
Administrative Assistant positions at a university can support H-1B, TN, J-1, and OPT pathways depending on your nationality and degree. Confirm with UK's human resources office early whether your target role qualifies as a specialty occupation under USCIS criteria, since this varies by job scope.
Ask about sponsorship before accepting an offer
UK's HR and international hiring processes are separate tracks. Raise sponsorship requirements explicitly during the offer stage, not after signing. Delaying this conversation can compress filing timelines and create gaps if USCIS processing or DOL PERM certification takes longer than expected.
Use Migrate Mate to find open Administrative Assistant roles
Filtering for sponsoring employers in higher education takes time manually. Migrate Mate surfaces Administrative Assistant openings at universities like UK that have a verified sponsorship history, so you can focus applications on employers already set up to support the process.
Prepare your work authorization documents before interviews
UK participates in E-Verify, so your I-94, visa stamp, and any existing EAD or OPT documentation should be current and organized before your first HR conversation. Gaps or expired documents can stall an otherwise straightforward onboarding process significantly.

Find Administrative Assistant at University of Kentucky JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of Kentucky sponsor H-1B visas for Administrative Assistants?
Yes, University of Kentucky does sponsor H-1B visas for Administrative Assistant roles, though approval depends on whether the specific position qualifies as a specialty occupation under USCIS standards. Not every administrative title clears that bar automatically. Roles tied to research administration, grants management, or specialized academic operations tend to have a stronger case than general clerical positions. Confirming the job description's scope with UK's HR team before applying is the most reliable first step.
How do I apply for Administrative Assistant jobs at University of Kentucky?
Applications go through UK's official jobs portal at uky.edu/hr. Each posting lists required qualifications, department, and salary grade. You'll submit a resume, cover letter, and references through the online system. For roles where you need sponsorship, note your work authorization status clearly in your application materials. Migrate Mate also lists open Administrative Assistant positions at UK, which makes it easier to identify roles with a sponsorship history before you apply.
Which visa types are commonly used for Administrative Assistant roles at University of Kentucky?
UK supports several visa categories for administrative staff depending on your background and nationality. H-1B is the most common path for degree-holding candidates in specialized roles. F-1 OPT and CPT work for current or recent international students. TN visas are available for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying administrative occupations. J-1 visas are sometimes used for exchange visitors in support roles. The right fit depends on your degree, nationality, and how the specific role is classified.
What qualifications does University of Kentucky expect for Administrative Assistant roles?
Most Administrative Assistant postings at UK list a high school diploma or GED as a minimum, but competitive candidates typically hold an associate's or bachelor's degree and bring experience in higher education or a related institutional setting. Proficiency with university systems like SAP, PeopleSoft, or grant management platforms is a meaningful differentiator. Roles in research-heavy departments often require familiarity with sponsored program administration or IRB coordination, which goes well beyond standard office administration skills.
How do I time my application around visa processing at University of Kentucky?
Timeline depends on your visa type. H-1B cap-subject petitions must be filed by April 1 for an October 1 start, so your offer and paperwork need to be in place well before spring. OPT allows you to start sooner, but your EAD must be valid on your first day. For PERM-based Green Card sponsorship, the DOL certification process alone can take a year or more. Starting conversations with UK's HR and international office as early as possible in your job search protects you from avoidable gaps.
