Tailor your resume to university administrative norms
University administrative roles prioritize experience with scheduling, records management, and cross-departmental coordination. Align your resume to reflect those functions specifically, since academic institutions evaluate support staff differently than corporate employers do.
Target departments with high administrative turnover
Research-heavy units like medical centers, grant-funded labs, and graduate schools at Rochester post administrative openings frequently. Focusing your applications on those departments improves your odds of landing a role where sponsorship is already part of the hiring workflow.
Confirm your visa type is supported before applying
Rochester sponsors multiple visa categories for administrative staff, including H-1B, E-3, and TN. Verify that the specific role meets the specialty occupation standard required by USCIS for H-1B classification, since not all administrative titles qualify without a clear degree requirement attached.
Ask about H-1B timing during the offer stage
If you need H-1B sponsorship, ask HR whether the role qualifies for a cap-exempt filing through the university's nonprofit status. Cap-exempt employers can file year-round, so you're not locked into the April lottery window that applies to most private-sector employers.
Use Migrate Mate to find open administrative roles
Filtering for visa-sponsoring employers in higher education saves significant research time. Use Migrate Mate to identify current Administrative Assistant openings at University of Rochester and confirm which positions are actively hiring international candidates.
Prepare your credential documentation before the PERM stage
If your path involves an EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card, Rochester's HR team will need to document that no qualified U.S. worker was available. Gather your foreign degree equivalency evaluations and employment records early so the DOL PERM labor certification process isn't delayed by missing paperwork.

You can also use Migrate Mate to browse current Administrative Assistant openings at Rochester that are open to visa sponsorship, which helps you prioritize roles before applying directly through the university's system.

Rochester supports several visa categories for administrative staff, including H-1B, E-3 for Australian citizens, TN for Canadian and Mexican nationals, J-1 for exchange visitors, and F-1 OPT and CPT for recent graduates. The right category depends on your nationality, degree, and how the specific role is classified by the university's international employment team.
What qualifications does University of Rochester expect for Administrative Assistant positions?
