INTRODUCTION
The Offline Driving Intelligence (ODIN) team at Zoox is leveraging the latest in AI to craft algorithms that understand the world. We leverage large models first offline and we devise a path of impact into our self-driving robot, enabling safe and efficient navigation in complex environments.
As an engineer in the ODIN team, you will develop advanced multimodal large language models that enhance environmental understanding. You'll develop and fine-tune these models for off-vehicle analysis while working with the onboard team to deliver impact in our robotaxi platform, ensuring they can efficiently identify hazards and interpret driving restrictions with minimal latency. Working alongside world-class engineers and researchers, you'll leverage premium sensor data and cutting-edge infrastructure to validate your algorithms in real-world conditions, directly impacting productivity, safety and the capability of Zoox's autonomous system.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead the development of multimodal large language models that enhance our robotaxis' understanding of complex urban environments
- Design effective model architectures and sophisticated training techniques, leveraging all the inputs from our sensor stack and the overall large scale data we have at Zoox
- Drive end-to-end ML solutions from research to production, utilizing Zoox's extensive data pipelines and infrastructure to improve autonomous driving capabilities
- Collaborate with perception, planning, safety, and systems teams to integrate your models into the vehicle's decision-making pipeline
- Validate and optimize your solutions using real-world driving scenarios, directly contributing to the safety and reliability of Zoox's autonomous system
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- MS or PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or related technical field
- Demonstrated experience training and deploying large language models (LLMs)
- Experience building and maintaining ML training pipelines, including data preprocessing, model training, and evaluation
- Proficiency in Python and ML libraries (PyTorch, NumPy) demonstrated through professional or research projects
- Experience training with large scale datasets (e.g. tens of millions of videos)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Publications in top-tier conferences (CVPR, ICCV, RSS, ICRA)
- Experience with autonomous robotics systems

Tailor your portfolio to autonomous systems
Zoox hires ML engineers to solve problems in perception, sensor fusion, and motion prediction. Projects or publications involving LiDAR data, trajectory forecasting, or real-time inference will read as directly relevant to their hiring team.
Confirm your visa type before applying
Zoox sponsors H-1B, E-3, TN, and F-1 OPT among other categories. Knowing which visa applies to your nationality lets you ask targeted questions during recruiting and avoids surprises at the offer stage.
Time OPT applications around Zoox hiring cycles
If you're on F-1 OPT, USCIS recommends filing your OPT EAD application 90 days before your program end date. Coordinating your job search so an offer arrives before your OPT window closes prevents unnecessary gaps.
Ask specifically about internal H-1B transfer timelines
If you already hold an H-1B with another employer, Zoox can file an H-1B transfer and you're authorized to start on the receipt notice. Confirm this with the recruiter early so your start date doesn't get delayed by processing assumptions.
Use Migrate Mate to surface active ML openings at Zoox
ML roles at Zoox span perception, simulation, and autonomy planning, and they don't all carry identical titles. Use Migrate Mate to filter Zoox's open positions by role function and confirmed sponsorship so you're applying to the right listings.
Understand how PERM affects long-term planning at Zoox
Zoox sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards, which require a PERM labor certification filed with the DOL. For ML engineers from India or China, priority date backlogs make early employer conversations about Green Card timelines essential.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Zoox sponsor H-1B visas for Machine Learning roles?
Yes, Zoox sponsors H-1B visas for Machine Learning positions. The company has a consistent history of filing H-1B petitions for technical roles including ML engineers. If you're already on an H-1B with another employer, Zoox can file a transfer petition, and you're generally authorized to begin work once USCIS issues a receipt notice.
Which visa types does Zoox commonly sponsor for Machine Learning positions?
Zoox sponsors a wide range of visa categories for ML roles, including H-1B, H-1B1 visa (for Chilean and Singaporean nationals), E-3 visa (for Australian nationals), TN visa (for Canadian and Mexican nationals), F-1 OPT and CPT, J-1 visa, and immigrant pathways including EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards. The right category depends on your nationality and current immigration status.
What qualifications does Zoox expect for Machine Learning roles?
Zoox ML roles typically require a graduate degree in computer science, electrical engineering, robotics, or a closely related field, along with hands-on experience in deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow. For senior roles, published research or production experience in perception, prediction, or planning systems is commonly expected. Familiarity with sensor data pipelines, particularly LiDAR and camera fusion, is a recurring requirement across their ML job postings.
How do I apply for Machine Learning jobs at Zoox?
You can browse and apply for Machine Learning openings at Zoox directly through their careers page, or use Migrate Mate to filter Zoox positions by role type and confirmed visa sponsorship. When applying, align your resume and portfolio to Zoox's autonomous vehicle focus, specifically perception, simulation, or planning systems. Recruiting timelines for ML roles can run eight to twelve weeks from initial screen to offer.
How do I plan my visa timeline when targeting a Machine Learning role at Zoox?
Timeline planning depends on your current status. F-1 OPT applicants should file the EAD with USCIS up to 90 days before their program end date to avoid work authorization gaps. H-1B cap-subject candidates need an offer in place before the April lottery registration window. E-3 and TN holders can typically move faster since those categories are not lottery-dependent and can be processed at the consulate or port of entry.
