INTRODUCTION
As a Staff Technical Program Manager for Powertrain and Thermal, you will serve as the Program Lead for our Powertrain & Thermal team. You will provide the overarching technical direction and leadership required to guide the vehicle program from concept through production across Powertrain and Thermal domains.
In this position, you will bridge the gap between high-level program milestones and deep technical execution. You are responsible for balancing performance attributes, cost, quality, and manufacturability while coordinating engineering execution across our internal team and external partners.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
In this role, you will:
- Serve as the program and technical lead for the vehicle program across powertrain and thermal system design components, such as high voltage batteries, high voltage systems, component cooling systems, and cabin climate systems, while collaborating with internal engineers and external supplier design teams to ensure cohesive engineering execution.
- Oversee BOM integrity, approve critical build processes, and drive quality and cost engineering initiatives throughout the supply chain for your major assemblies.
- Develop program schedules and partner with suppliers, quality, procurement, service, manufacturing, and engineering teams to drive complex open issues to closure and ensure on-time delivery.
- Identify and communicate program progress, engineering challenges, and technical risks while proactively developing and leading strategic mitigation plans across the organization.
- Lead the root-cause analysis and tracking of critical build and design issues impacting vehicle performance, quality, and production readiness to drive long-term engineering solutions.
- Influence system designs to optimize performance, cost, quality, manufacturability, and serviceability by leading top-level design reviews, DFMEAs, validation programs, and manufacturing mock-builds.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineer, or a related technical discipline
- 12+ years of deep automotive engineering experience, with a focus on automotive powertrain or thermal system design and project management.
- Proficiency with advanced automotive engineering tools and methodologies, including CATIA V5/V6, PLM/BOM management, FMEA/FTA, and structured root-cause analysis (8D, Fishbone), and project management tools (e.g., JIRA, Confluence, Polarion, Gantt charts, ERP, PLM, ALM).
- Experience designing for attributes such as crash, NVH, reliability, strength, and corrosion.
- A proven track record of managing complex cross-functional projects and delivering components via external design suppliers and contract manufacturers.
- End-to-end New Product Introduction (NPI) experience.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills across all levels, from peers and suppliers to manufacturing and executive management.
- Ability to travel globally as required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Familiarity with hardware/firmware product development and vehicle CAN/Firmware.

Tips for Finding Technical Manager Jobs at Zoox
Frame your credentials around AV program management
Zoox hires Technical Managers who can own hardware and software delivery pipelines for autonomous systems. Tailor your resume to show cross-functional ownership in robotics, sensor integration, or safety-critical development, not just generic people management experience.
Verify your visa category matches the role level
Technical Manager positions at Zoox typically require a qualifying specialty occupation for H-1B or E-3 purposes. Confirm your degree field aligns with the role before applying, since a general management background without a technical degree can create USCIS specialty occupation issues.
Target Zoox teams building full-stack AV infrastructure
Zoox organizes Technical Managers around distinct verticals like vehicle software, autonomy, and manufacturing systems. Applying to a team whose technical domain matches your background improves both interview success and the strength of your visa petition's specialty occupation justification.
Start the LCA filing timeline early with your recruiter
The Department of Labor must certify a Labor Condition Application before USCIS can receive your H-1B or E-3 petition. Ask Zoox's immigration team during offer negotiations how long their LCA process typically runs so your start date isn't delayed.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open Technical Manager roles at Zoox
Zoox posts across multiple channels, but not every listing signals sponsorship availability. Migrate Mate filters specifically for verified sponsoring employers, so you can focus your applications on Zoox openings where visa support is already confirmed.
Prepare documentation for concurrent status if you're on OPT
If you're transitioning from F-1 OPT to an H-1B at Zoox, the cap-gap rule protects your work authorization if your OPT expires between April and October 1. Keep your I-20, EAD, and OPT STEM extension records accessible throughout the petition period.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Zoox sponsor H-1B visas for Technical Managers?
Yes, Zoox sponsors H-1B visas for Technical Manager roles. The role must qualify as a specialty occupation, which generally requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a technical field directly related to the position. Zoox's immigration team handles the Labor Condition Application through DOL and the subsequent USCIS petition, typically coordinating the timeline around your offer acceptance and intended start date.
How do I apply for Technical Manager jobs at Zoox?
You can apply directly through Zoox's careers site or find verified sponsoring openings through Migrate Mate, which filters for roles where visa support is confirmed. When applying, tailor your application to the specific AV domain the team works in, whether that's autonomy software, vehicle systems, or manufacturing. Zoox's Technical Manager hiring process typically includes recruiter screens, technical leadership interviews, and a cross-functional panel.
Which visa types does Zoox commonly use for Technical Manager roles?
Zoox sponsors H-1B, E-3 visa, H-1B1 visa, TN visa, and F-1 OPT and CPT for Technical Manager positions, as well as employment-based Green Card pathways including EB-2 and EB-3. The right category depends on your nationality and current status. Australian citizens can pursue the E-3 visa as a faster alternative to the H-1B lottery. Canadian and Mexican nationals may qualify for TN visa status if the role maps to an eligible USMCA occupation category.
What qualifications does Zoox expect for Technical Manager roles?
Zoox typically looks for a bachelor's or master's degree in a technical discipline such as computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or robotics, combined with direct experience managing engineering teams in safety-critical or autonomous systems environments. Demonstrated ability to drive delivery across hardware and software workstreams is weighted heavily. Prior experience in the AV, aerospace, or advanced manufacturing industries strengthens your candidacy significantly.
How do I understand the visa filing timeline for a Technical Manager offer at Zoox?
The timeline depends on your visa category. For H-1B, Zoox must file during the April cap season unless you are transferring from another H-1B employer, in which case filing can happen year-round. E-3 and TN petitions move faster since they are not subject to an annual lottery. For any category, the DOL Labor Condition Application must be certified first, which typically takes seven to ten business days. Raise timeline questions directly with Zoox's immigration team during the offer stage.
