Frame your experience around engineering leadership scope
Google's Technical Manager hiring focuses on candidates who've owned cross-functional delivery, not just managed engineers. Quantify team size, technical complexity, and business outcomes in your resume before you apply.
Target Google teams with established sponsorship patterns
Google's infrastructure, cloud, and ads engineering orgs have consistent histories of sponsoring Technical Managers. Search DOL LCA disclosure data by SOC code to identify which Google divisions file most frequently for this role.
Align your start date with H-1B cap and lottery timelines
If you need a cap-subject H-1B, USCIS registration opens in March for an October 1 start date. Build that into your offer negotiation so Google's legal team can file in time.
Prepare to demonstrate specialty occupation for your specific role
USCIS scrutinizes Technical Manager petitions closely. Your offer letter and supporting documentation should spell out that a specialized degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field is required, not just preferred, for the position.

Find Technical Manager at Google JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Google sponsor H-1B visas for Technical Managers?
Yes, Google sponsors H-1B visas for Technical Manager roles. Depending on your nationality, you may also be eligible for H-1B1 (for citizens of Singapore or Chile) or E-3 (for Australian citizens), both of which bypass the H-1B lottery. Google's legal team manages the petition process, but you'll want to confirm your visa category early in the offer stage so timelines align.
How do I apply for Technical Manager jobs at Google?
Applications go through Google's careers portal at careers.google.com. Technical Manager roles typically involve a recruiter screen, a hiring manager conversation, and a structured interview loop covering technical leadership, cross-functional collaboration, and systems thinking. You can also browse current Technical Manager openings at Google filtered by visa sponsorship availability on Migrate Mate, which surfaces roles Google is actively hiring for.
Which visa types does Google commonly use for Technical Manager roles?
Google files H-1B, H-1B1, and E-3 petitions for Technical Managers, depending on the candidate's nationality. H-1B is the most broadly available but subject to an annual lottery. H-1B1 and E-3 are nationality-specific alternatives that aren't lottery-based, making them faster in practice. Google's immigration team is familiar with all three categories for this role.
What qualifications does Google expect for Technical Manager candidates?
Google's Technical Manager roles typically require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, electrical engineering, or a related technical field, plus substantial experience leading engineering teams. In practice, strong candidates bring a track record of shipping complex technical systems, managing senior engineers, and working across product and engineering functions. Prior experience at a large-scale technology company is common among successful hires.
How do I plan my timeline if I need visa sponsorship for a Google Technical Manager role?
Timeline depends on your visa category. E-3 and H-1B1 petitions can be filed year-round and typically adjudicate within a few months, allowing relatively flexible start dates. Cap-subject H-1B has a fixed annual cycle: USCIS registration opens in March, and approved petitions take effect October 1. If you're in the lottery, build at least six to eight months of runway into your job search and offer negotiation.
