Control Electrician Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a control electrician in New York?
Becoming a control electrician in New York starts with completing a registered electrical apprenticeship, typically through a program affiliated with IBEW locals such as IBEW Local 3 in New York City or Local 41 in Buffalo. After accumulating required hours, you apply for a New York State-issued electrician license through the Department of State. Many employers also expect demonstrated PLC and controls experience gained through vocational training or an associate degree in electrical technology.
How much do control electricians make in New York?
Control electricians in New York earn a median of about $78,750 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $45,740 for the lowest 10% to over $131,640 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire control electricians in New York?
Employers hiring control electricians in New York right now include LaBella Associates, LAPORTE, and Ge Grid Solutions, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's dense mix of utilities, manufacturing plants, and commercial building operations means control electrician roles turn over regularly across both the downstate metro area and upstate industrial corridors.
Which New York cities have the most control electrician jobs?
The New York cities with the most control electrician openings are Rochester, Buffalo, and Webster. New York City leads because of its massive commercial construction and building automation sector, while Buffalo and Albany draw demand from manufacturing plants, energy facilities, and state government infrastructure projects that require ongoing controls work.
Are there remote control electrician jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Control electrician work is fundamentally hands-on, requiring on-site access to panels, field devices, and physical wiring, so most roles require a physical presence. About 11% of control electrician openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to cover controls engineering support, remote SCADA monitoring, or project documentation rather than active installation work.
How can I get hired as a control electrician in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is enrolling in a registered apprenticeship through an IBEW local, such as Local 3 in New York City or Local 41 in Buffalo, which accept candidates without prior experience and pay a wage throughout training. Large New York employers in building automation and utilities also hire electrician helpers and low-voltage technician trainees who transition into controls roles. Earning a NYSED-recognized certificate in electrical technology or PLC fundamentals from a SUNY community college strengthens any application significantly.
Where can I find and apply to control electrician jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to control electrician jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the listings to see roles that match your experience level, location, and specialization, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
