Controls Engineer Jobs in Tampa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a controls engineer job in Tampa?
Focus your search on Tampa's manufacturing, utilities, and defense sectors, which generate the most consistent local demand. The Port Tampa Bay area, Hillsborough County industrial parks, and MacDill Air Force Base's contractor ecosystem are the densest hiring pockets. Candidates who can demonstrate PLC programming experience, specifically Allen-Bradley or Siemens platforms, and familiarity with SCADA systems stand out in this market. Networking through local chapters of ISA and IEEE also opens doors with Tampa-area hiring managers.
Which companies hire controls engineers in Tampa?
Tampa controls engineer roles are posted by Hatch, Stark Tech, and Sargent & Lundy and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Tampa's hiring mix includes defense contractors tied to MacDill AFB, water and wastewater utilities, and regional food processing and packaging manufacturers seeking automation expertise.
Are there remote controls engineer jobs in Tampa?
Yes, though controls engineering is largely hands-on work, so fully remote roles are the exception rather than the rule. About 50% of controls engineer openings tied to Tampa are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting demand from employers who offer remote work for design, programming, and documentation phases. On-site commissioning and troubleshooting assignments still require Tampa-area presence for most roles.
How can I get a controls engineer job in Tampa with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Tampa is through automation technician or junior PLC programmer roles at local manufacturers and utilities, where hands-on training is built into the position. Tampa employers in water treatment, packaging, and defense contracting regularly hire candidates from Hillsborough Community College's engineering technology programs or nearby University of South Florida graduates. Building a portfolio of personal PLC projects or completing vendor certifications from Rockwell Automation strengthens your candidacy for entry-level openings here.
Which industries hire the most controls engineers in Tampa?
The sectors hiring the most controls engineers in Tampa are Technology & Software, Construction & Real Estate, and Consulting & Professional Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Tampa's combination of active port operations, a large defense contractor presence around MacDill AFB, and growing food and beverage manufacturing drives consistent regional demand for automation and controls expertise.
