Controls Engineer Jobs in Houston: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a controls engineer job in Houston?
Focus your search on Houston's oil and gas operators, petrochemical plants along the Ship Channel, and industrial automation firms in Pasadena and La Porte. Hands-on experience with PLCs, DCS platforms like Honeywell or Emerson DeltaV, and familiarity with process safety standards gives candidates a clear edge here. Networking through local ISA Houston Section events and targeting engineering and procurement contractors that serve the Energy Corridor also opens doors faster than applying cold.
Which companies hire controls engineers in Houston?
Companies currently hiring controls engineers in Houston include Johnson Controls, McDermott, and KBR, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Houston's hiring mix leans heavily toward energy majors, midstream operators, EPC firms, and specialty industrial automation integrators serving the Gulf Coast refining and chemical corridor.
Are there remote controls engineer jobs in Houston?
Yes, but they are relatively rare for controls engineers because most roles require hands-on work with physical control systems, instrumentation, and on-site commissioning. About 5% of controls engineer openings tied to Houston are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those tend to be project engineering, controls system design, or technical support roles where the hands-on phase is minimal.
How can I get a controls engineer job in Houston with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Houston is targeting EPC contractors and systems integrators that take on large refinery or chemical plant projects and hire junior controls engineers for commissioning and startup support. Entry-level roles with titles like controls technician, instrumentation designer, or junior automation engineer are common stepping stones. A co-op or internship with a Houston-area energy company or engineering firm, combined with PLC programming coursework, makes a candidate stand out in a market that values hands-on readiness from day one.
Which industries hire the most controls engineers in Houston?
The sectors hiring the most controls engineers in Houston are Consulting & Professional Services, Energy, and Manufacturing, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Houston's position as the U.S. energy capital, anchored by refining, petrochemicals, LNG, and midstream infrastructure along the Gulf Coast, makes it one of the highest-demand markets for controls engineering talent in the country.
