How do you become a counseling psychologist in New York?
To become a licensed counseling psychologist in New York, you must earn a doctoral degree in psychology from an accredited program, complete a supervised internship, and pass the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology. Licensure is granted by the New York State Education Department Office of the Professions, which also requires a postdoctoral supervised experience period before full independent licensure is issued. Meeting these requirements qualifies you to practice independently across New York's public and private settings.
How much do counseling psychologists make in New York?
Counseling psychologists in New York earn a median of about $114,400 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $64,980 for the lowest 10% to over $204,540 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire counseling psychologists in New York?
Employers hiring counseling psychologists in New York right now include Zeta Charter Schools, Marymount School Of New York, and City University of New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's large integrated health systems, municipal behavioral health agencies, and university counseling centers consistently post the highest volume of counseling psychology openings across the state.
Which New York cities have the most counseling psychologist jobs?
New York, Bronx, and Ithaca have the most counseling psychologist openings in New York. New York City drives the largest share by far, anchored by its density of hospital systems, community mental health organizations, and university campuses, while Albany's concentration of state government health agencies and Buffalo's expanding medical corridor sustain meaningful demand in their own right.
Are there remote counseling psychologist jobs in New York?
Yes, but they are less common than in purely desk-based fields because much of counseling psychology involves direct clinical contact. About 0% of counseling psychologist openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting a real but selective shift toward telehealth. The roles most likely to be fully remote are those focused on teletherapy, psychological assessment review, or consultation rather than on-site clinical care.
How can I get hired as a counseling psychologist in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing a pre-doctoral internship or postdoctoral fellowship through a New York-based APA-accredited site, such as those offered through NYC Health + Hospitals, Northwell Health, or the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System. Many candidates also enter through associate or staff psychologist roles that allow supervised hours toward full licensure. Holding a provisional New York psychology license and demonstrating coursework in evidence-based modalities gives candidates a clear advantage in entry-level applicant pools.
