Environmental Compliance Manager Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a environmental compliance manager in New York?
Most environmental compliance managers in New York begin with a bachelor's degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, chemistry, or a related field, then build experience under New York State DEC regulations. While no single state-issued license is mandatory for the role, employers strongly favor candidates who hold credentials such as the Certified Hazardous Materials Manager designation or a Registered Environmental Manager certification. Progressing from roles like environmental analyst or EHS coordinator within regulated industries such as utilities, manufacturing, or real estate development is the most direct path in New York.
How much do environmental compliance managers make in New York?
Environmental compliance managers in New York earn a median of about $90,080 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $53,330 for the lowest 10% to over $142,370 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire environmental compliance managers in New York?
Employers hiring environmental compliance managers in New York right now include Environmental Resources Management, Amazon, and Arcadis, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's dense regulatory environment, anchored by New York State DEC oversight and active brownfield and Superfund programs, keeps demand steady across utilities, large developers, and state agencies throughout the year.
Which New York cities have the most environmental compliance manager jobs?
The cities with the most environmental compliance manager openings in New York are New York, Albany, and Rochester. New York City dominates because of its concentration of large utilities, real estate developers, and corporate headquarters with active compliance obligations, while Albany draws heavily from state agency hiring and regulated industries clustered near the capital, and Buffalo reflects manufacturing and energy sector demand in western New York.
Are there remote environmental compliance manager jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based fields, since much of the work involves site inspections, permit coordination, and agency meetings that require physical presence. About 0% of environmental compliance manager openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and the positions that do offer flexibility tend to concentrate on policy development, regulatory reporting, and internal audit functions rather than field compliance work.
How can I get hired as a environmental compliance manager in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through an environmental analyst or EHS coordinator role at a regulated New York employer such as a utility company, large manufacturer, or state or municipal agency. Organizations like the New York State DEC and New York City Department of Environmental Protection regularly hire entry-level environmental professionals and offer structured exposure to permitting and enforcement processes. Earning a Certified Hazardous Materials Manager credential early and gaining experience with New York State DEC databases and SPDES reporting makes candidates noticeably more competitive for first positions.
