Counselor Jobs in Portland: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a counselor job in Portland?
Portland's strongest hiring comes from community mental health centers, Federally Qualified Health Centers, school districts, and substance use treatment nonprofits concentrated in Old Town, the Central Eastside, and East Portland neighborhoods. Candidates with experience in trauma-informed care, co-occurring disorders, or bilingual services stand out in this market. Familiarity with Oregon Health Plan billing and documentation systems also gives applicants a practical edge with local employers.
Which companies hire counselors in Portland?
Companies currently hiring counselors in Portland include Central City Concern, Providence, and Morrison Child and Family Services, per current listings on MigrateAte as of August 2026. Portland's counselor market is anchored by large nonprofit behavioral health agencies, integrated health systems, and public school districts, with smaller community-based organizations filling much of the remaining demand.
Are there remote counselor jobs in Portland?
Yes, though remote counselor work is less common than in purely desk-based fields since many roles involve direct client contact and in-person care settings. About 50% of counselor openings tied to Portland are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, with telehealth counseling and case management coordination being the most likely positions to offer flexible arrangements locally.
How can I get a counselor job in Portland with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Portland is through a paid practicum or internship with one of the city's community mental health nonprofits or county-contracted behavioral health programs, many of which hire from their own intern cohorts. Entry-level case manager, crisis line specialist, and peer support specialist roles at organizations serving Old Town and East Portland neighborhoods are the most accessible first steps, and bilingual candidates or those with lived experience in recovery are in particularly high demand.
