About the role
We are looking for an AI Engineer intern to help build and maintain the integrations that power our AI security platform at Proofpoint. In this role, you will focus on defining, implementing, and supporting AI provider integrations—ensuring secure, reliable, and observable interactions between our product and external AI systems (LLMs, APIs, and emerging AI services).
You will play a key role in enabling visibility, control, and protection across a diverse and rapidly evolving AI ecosystem.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to the design and development of a multi-agent AI system for automated discovery and analysis of AI Providers
- Design, implement, and maintain AI provider definitions and integrations within the platform
- Monitor and support existing integrations, troubleshooting issues and improving reliability
- Define and track key metrics for each provider, including latency cost and usage efficiency
- Build dashboards and instrumentation to monitor provider performance in real time
- Drive data-informed decisions to optimize provider selection and configuration
Required Qualifications
- Recent graduate (or final year student) in Data Science
- Strong interest in AI, LLMs, and autonomous agents
- Proficiency in Python or similar backend languages
- Proactive mindset: you actively explore and experiment with new AI tools and providers
- Strong analytical skills with a metrics-driven approach to system performance
Preferred Skills
- Experience with multi-agent systems or orchestration frameworks
- Experience with AI observability, logging, or monitoring systems
- Interest in AI product design or developer tools
- Contributions to side projects, GitHub repos, or research work

Does CPT for an AI Engineer role require the employer to file anything with USCIS?
No. CPT authorization is entirely school-driven. Your DSO updates your I-20 to reflect the authorized employer, start date, and end date. USCIS is not involved and no petition is filed. The employer only needs to verify your eligibility through E-Verify and onboard you with your updated I-20 as the work authorization document.
Can I do full-time CPT as an AI Engineer without affecting my OPT eligibility?
You can use full-time CPT for one year or less without losing OPT eligibility. If you accumulate more than 12 months of full-time CPT across your degree program, you lose OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, meaning fewer than 20 hours per week, doesn't count toward that limit regardless of duration.
How do I show my AI Engineer duties are integral to my curriculum?
Your DSO needs to connect specific job duties to a course you're enrolled in or a thesis requirement.
