As an AMD intern, you’ll be placed at the epicenter of the AI ecosystem, working alongside experts and industry pioneers. You’ll do important work, learn new skills, expand your network, and gain real-world experience on projects that impact millions of end-users worldwide. JOB DETAILS:
Location: Santa Clara, CA, USA
Onsite/Hybrid: This role requires the student to work full time (40 hours a week), in either a hybrid or onsite work structure throughout the duration of the co-op/intern term
Duration: Summer 2027 Internship
+ Semester Schools: May 24, 2027 – August 13, 2027
+ Quarter Schools: June 21, 2027 – September 10, 2027
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:
We are seeking highly motivated AI Research intern to join our team. In this role –
Develop and optimize infrastructure for RL-based post-training of large language and multimodal models.
Build scalable systems for rollout generation, inference, reward computation, and policy updates.
Improve distributed training efficiency, reliability, fault tolerance, and resource utilization.
Design interfaces that enable researchers to implement and evaluate new RL algorithms quickly.
Build tools for experiment configuration, checkpointing, logging, monitoring, and reproducibility.
Profile end-to-end training pipelines and resolve performance, memory, and communication bottlenecks.
Support on-policy and off-policy training workflows using verifiable, preference-based, or model-generated feedback.
Collaborate with researchers to translate experimental requirements into production-quality infrastructure.
* Document system designs and contribute to technical reports and publications.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Must be currently pursuing a PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
Strong programming skills in Python and experience with PyTorch.
Knowledge of reinforcement learning, LLM post-training, RLHF/RLAIF, or preference optimization.
Experience with distributed training, multi-GPU workloads, or large-scale inference.
Familiarity with parallelism strategies such as data, tensor, pipeline, or sequence parallelism.
Experience with training and inference frameworks, orchestration systems, or cluster environments.
Understanding of GPU performance, memory management, networking, and distributed communication.
Experience building reliable research infrastructure, profiling systems, or debugging distributed workloads.
Familiarity with containerization, experiment tracking, and cloud or cluster computing is beneficial.
Publications at leading venues such as ICML, NeurIPS, ICLR, MLSys, CVPR, ICCV, or ECCV are preferred.

Does an AI Researcher role qualify for CPT authorization?
It qualifies if the work is an integral part of your enrolled curriculum and your DSO approves it. Research-focused roles involving model development, dataset curation, or experimental design typically connect clearly to graduate programs in computer science, data science, or AI. Roles that are primarily engineering or product work with minimal research components may require closer review by your DSO before authorization.
Can I do CPT at a research lab or university spinout instead of a large tech company?
Yes, CPT authorization is employer-agnostic as long as the work ties to your curriculum. Academic research labs, government research centers, and early-stage AI startups all qualify structurally. The practical issue is that smaller organizations may not have a standard onboarding process for F-1 students, so you'll want to confirm they can provide a compliant offer letter and agree to your CPT start and end dates before your DSO submits the authorization.
How many hours per week can I work as an AI Researcher on CPT?
Part-time CPT is defined as 20 hours per week or fewer; full-time CPT is more than 20 hours per week. Full-time CPT for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, so most students in research roles structure CPT as part-time or limit full-time periods carefully. Your DSO tracks cumulative full-time CPT across all employers, not just your current one.

If you use 12 or more months of full-time CPT, you lose OPT entirely, removing the practical training window most employers use to sponsor H-1B petitions. Part-time CPT has no effect on OPT eligibility regardless of duration.
