ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The PSCo Regulatory team is looking for an intern that can support our efforts to implement AI and automation tools into our everyday work. From streamlining processes to conducting research to supporting the development of operational plans, we have a clear need to harness the tools AI and automation can provide to improve our external filings and simplify our internal processes.
Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
- Develop AI agents to automate administrative tasks
- Develop AI agents or system automation to track and update internal systems
- Develop AI agents to review, polish, and improve written documents and presentations
- Update and refine existing agents to improve functionality
This position is for a May 31, 2027 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel Energy’s business needs.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Current student, Junior or higher (as of Fall 2027)
- Enrolled in an accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Data science, information systems, project management
- Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the school year (up to 20 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in-person, per our hybrid work policy.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Demonstration of ability to create, edit, and design AI or automation tools using programs such as CoPilot, ChatGPT, Claude, etc.

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $20.90 to $22.10 per hour

Does an AI Intern role qualify for CPT authorization?
An AI Intern role qualifies for CPT if the work is an integral part of your enrolled curriculum and your DSO approves it. Roles involving machine learning research, data pipeline development, or NLP model evaluation typically connect to computer science, data science, or engineering programs. Your DSO will review the offer letter and confirm the curriculum tie before issuing the CPT authorization on your I-20.
Can I do a remote AI internship on CPT?
Yes, remote CPT is permitted under F-1 regulations as long as your DSO authorizes the position and your I-20 reflects the correct employer and work location. USCIS guidance allows remote work for CPT, but your school's own policies may require the employer to be U.S.-based. Confirm your institution's remote CPT rules with your DSO before accepting a fully remote offer.
How do I find AI Intern employers who understand CPT?

What happens if my CPT authorization expires before the internship ends?
Working past your CPT end date on your I-20 is an unauthorized employment violation that can affect your F-1 status. If your project extends, your DSO must issue a new I-20 amendment before the current authorization expires. Coordinate with your supervisor and DSO at least two to three weeks before your listed end date to initiate the extension paperwork.
Does CPT use count against my OPT eligibility for AI roles after graduation?
Only if you use 12 or more months of full-time CPT. Full-time CPT totaling a year or more eliminates your post-completion OPT eligibility entirely, which matters significantly for AI roles where H-1B visa sponsorship often follows OPT. Part-time CPT, regardless of duration, does not reduce OPT eligibility. Track your cumulative full-time CPT hours carefully across all semesters.
