CPT DevOps Jobs
DevOps roles connect directly to computer science, information systems, and software engineering curricula, making CPT authorization straightforward for students in these programs. Work in CI/CD pipelines, cloud infrastructure, containerization, and site reliability maps cleanly to coursework, which is the core requirement DSOs look for when approving CPT. Many DevOps positions accept part-time schedules, making them practical during active semesters.

DevOps CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
How does DevOps work qualify for CPT authorization?
CPT requires that your work be an integral part of your curriculum, and DevOps roles satisfy this clearly for students in computer science, information systems, cloud computing, and software engineering programs. Tasks like managing CI/CD pipelines, configuring Kubernetes clusters, writing infrastructure-as-code with Terraform, or supporting cloud deployments on AWS or Azure map directly to coursework in these programs. Your DSO will look for that connection when reviewing your authorization request, so framing your role description around specific technical responsibilities strengthens your case.
What academic documentation do I need to get CPT approved for a DevOps role?
Your school will typically require an offer letter from the employer describing your job duties, confirmation that the role connects to your degree program, and enrollment in a co-op or practicum course tied to the CPT. The offer letter should describe the technical work specifically, such as automation, deployment pipelines, or cloud infrastructure management, rather than using vague titles alone. Your DSO reviews these materials and issues the updated I-20 authorizing CPT before you start work.
Can I work part-time as a DevOps CPT student during the semester?
Yes, and part-time CPT under 20 hours per week is the most common arrangement during active semesters. DevOps roles often lend themselves well to part-time schedules because infrastructure maintenance, monitoring, and automation work can be structured around set hours. Full-time CPT is available during summer and winter breaks. Keep in mind that accumulating 12 or more months of full-time CPT across your program makes you ineligible for OPT, so plan your authorizations carefully if you intend to use OPT after graduation.
How do I find DevOps CPT positions that are realistic for students?
Migrate Mate is the most effective starting point because it filters specifically for roles open to CPT students, saving you from applying to positions where your work authorization will be a barrier. Beyond the job board, smaller technology companies and startups are often more flexible than large enterprises when it comes to accommodating student schedules and CPT paperwork, since there is no cost or USCIS filing required from the employer. University career centers and alumni networks in software and cloud engineering are also worth engaging early in your search.
Do DevOps employers need to file anything with USCIS for CPT hires?
No. CPT authorization is handled entirely by your school, not USCIS. The employer's only obligation is to provide an offer letter describing your role and duties, which your DSO uses to evaluate the CPT request and issue your updated I-20. There are no petitions, no government fees, and no waiting on federal processing. This makes CPT significantly faster and simpler for employers than other work authorization types, which is a genuine advantage when approaching companies that have not previously hired international students.
