Field Service/Shop Technicians (CT)
Electro-mechanical Technicians needed for maintenance, testing, troubleshooting and analysis of electrical power distribution equipment. Position involves repair and overhaul of power circuit breakers and related equipment in a shop environment as well as on-site maintenance and testing of power systems in industrial facilities. Frequent overtime and some overnight travel, mostly in southern New England, is also required. Strong mechanical aptitude necessary.

Do Field Technician roles qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the role directly relates to your program of study. Engineering technology, environmental science, telecommunications, and applied sciences programs routinely cover Field Technician duties in their curricula. Your DSO will assess whether the specific job tasks, not just the job title, connect to a required or elective course in your program before issuing CPT authorization.
Can I work as a Field Technician on CPT if the job requires a commercial driver's license?
CPT authorization covers your work eligibility under F-1 status, but it doesn't waive any employer-imposed licensing requirements. If the role requires a CDL or other state-issued license, you'll need to obtain it independently. Check with your DSO first to confirm the role qualifies curricularily, then confirm the licensing timeline with the employer before accepting.

What happens to my CPT authorization if my Field Technician employer changes my role or hours mid-semester?
Any material change to your CPT, including a shift in job duties, a change from part-time to full-time hours, or a new work location, requires updated DSO authorization before the change takes effect. Working under conditions that no longer match your I-20 CPT authorization puts your F-1 status at risk. Notify your DSO immediately if your employer modifies the original offer terms.
