Mechanical Designer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Mechanical Designer work qualify as CPT?
It qualifies if the position is directly tied to your program of study and your DSO authorizes it. Mechanical design roles in engineering, product development, or manufacturing typically satisfy the integral-to-curriculum requirement for students in mechanical, industrial, or systems engineering programs. Roles that are purely administrative or lack design deliverables may not qualify.
Can I do CPT at a company that doesn't have an immigration attorney on staff?
Yes. CPT authorization runs entirely through your school, not through the employer's legal team. The employer doesn't file anything with USCIS for CPT. They need to provide a written offer letter and job description for your DSO. Smaller engineering firms and manufacturing companies that have never sponsored a visa can still host CPT students without any special filing.
How do I find Mechanical Designer roles open to CPT students?
Most postings don't advertise CPT eligibility directly. Migrate Mate shows employers with established DOL filing history in engineering and design occupations, which signals familiarity with work authorization. Target companies in aerospace, automotive, medical devices, and industrial equipment, where project-based design work maps cleanly to a CPT authorization period.
Does full-time CPT affect my OPT eligibility?
Full-time CPT used for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours or fewer per week, does not affect OPT regardless of how many semesters you use it. If you plan to use OPT after graduation, track your full-time CPT carefully across all semesters and consult your DSO before accepting any full-time offer.
What if a Mechanical Designer role spans multiple semesters?
CPT authorization is issued per academic period, not per job. If the same employer continues your placement across semesters, your DSO must issue a new authorization for each term. The job can stay the same, but the documentation needs to be renewed. Plan re-authorization timing with your DSO before each semester begins to avoid gaps in your work authorization.
